Objectives
Students will be familiarized with Introduction and all
its sub-parts.
Students will learn about Attention Getter and its
types in depth.
What is an Introduction?
Introduces the entire topic (very important)
Has 4 parts in order:
1. The Attention Getter
2. The Thesis Statement (general)
3. Main points (specific)
4. Speaker’s Knowledge of the topic
The Attention Getter
 First words that grabs the audience’s attention
 MUST relate to the topic
 QQSS
 A Question
 A Quotation
 A Statistic
 A Story
Attention!
Question
Used for gathering information
• Open-Ended questions
• Yes/No
• Rhetorical
 EX: If you were to help someone to do a speech, what would
you tell them about introduction OR the very first words being
said? (Open-Ended q.)
Quotation
Used as a reference to somebody’s words
• Usually by famous person
EX: TOPIC– (facing fears/weakness)
“Only thing we have to fear is fear itself” - FDR

Statistics
Used to prove something
Numbers, facts, surveys, and other startling
statements that are TRUE
 EX: TOPIC– (Lack of self-confidence in girls)
“7 in 10 girls believe that they are not good enough or don’t
measure up in some way, including their looks, performance in
school and relationships with friends and family members.”

Story
Used to create an imaginary visual
Details are key!

Instructions for Activity
Get in a group with 5 members, 4 groups total.
As a group, choose one favorite
Youtuber/Celeberty!
Each group will be given only ONE type of Attention
Getter to discuss (i.e., QQSS)
Each group should assign a person as their
representative to present!
Attention Getter Type:
Statistics
EX: FouseyTube has over 7
million Subscribers.
Final Thoughts
