around string instruments, but now uses other
modern instruments too making in a little difficult
to give it an accurate definition. Its loud and strong
beats make it popular among the youths. Some of
the rock stars who have popularized the culture
include Little Richard, Bill Haley and Chuck Berry
while rock bands like Pink Floyd, The Doors,
Metallica, Nirvana and Megadeth are the modern
bands who have taken the culture by storm.
 Identified with swing and blue notes, Jazz has
its roots both in the West African and European
culture. It is said that Jazz is “one of America’s
original art forms” and boasts a unique
combination of creativity, coactions and
interactivity. Originating in the late 19th to early
20th century, Jazz has also played an important
role in introducing the world to a number of
women performers like Ella Fitzgerald, Betty
Carter, Abbey Lincoln and Ethel Waters.

for its bass and rhythm, this falls in the
electronic music genre. People consider it to be
a darker form of music, but since its birth in the
late 1990s, this genre has successfully made its
place in the industry.

all made it huge in the music industry with
their love for this form of music. Originated in
the 1940s, this African music is a combination
of hip hop, funk, dance, pop and soul focusing
on themes like relationships and freedom.

music while clubbing, but it is Detroit techno
that is considered to be the foundation of this
form of music. Unlike the days of its
emergence, the use of technology today has
greatly enhanced the quality of techno style
music and popularizing it among people day
by day.

has its roots from American folk and western
music. It is formed using simple forms of
instruments ranging from electric and steel
guitars to drums and mandolin or mouth
organ. Some very popular country music
singers include Shania Twain, Johnny Cash,
Taylor Swift and Kenny Rogers.
 A perfect blend of hip hop and electronic
music, electro or electro-funk uses drum
machine, vocoder and talkbox helping it to
distinguish itself from another similar form of
music, Disco. Notable artist who have been
onto this form of music include Arthur Barker,
Freeez, Man Parrish and Midnight Star.
 Falling in the genre of alternative rock music,
Indie Rock originated in the 1980s and has
gradually changed the music industry. After a
decade, it also gave birth to a couple of sun-
genres in related styles such as math rock, emo,
noise pop, post rock and lo-fi.
 “Pop” is a term derived from “Popular” and
thus Pop Music is known to be a genre of
popular music. With its roots in the rock& roll
style, this form can include any form of music
ranging from urban and dance to rock, country
and Latin. Instruments highly used are electric
guitars, synthesizer drums as well as bass and
one can listen to this form of music by listening
to songs by Britney Spears, Madonna, Beyonce,
Lady Gaga and of course the “King of Pop”
Michael Jackson.
 Raymundo Cipriano Pujante Cayabyab also
known as Mr. C born on May 4, 1954 in Santa
Cruz, Manila Philippines. Mr. C is a Filipino
musician, composer and conductor; he was
Executive and Artistic Director for several
years of the defunct San Miguel Foundation for
the Performing Arts. He was named a National
Artist of the Philippines in 2018.
 His works range from commissioned full-
length ballets, theater musicals, choral pieces, a
Mass set to unaccompanied chorus, and
orchestral pieces, to commercial recordings of
popular music, film scores and television
special.

 Francisco Beltran Buencamino was born on the
5th of November, 1883 in San Miguel de
Mayumo, Bulacan. He is the sixth of ten
children of Fortunato Buencamino and Luisa
Beltran. His father was a chruch organist and
band master, and his mother, a singer.
Francisco was married to Pilar Luceno and they
had two children, both of whom also took up
music.
 Francisco first learn music from his father. At
age 12, he could play the organ. At 14, he also
was sent to study at the Liceo de Manila. There,
he took up courses in composition and
harmony under Marcelo Adonay. He also took
up pianoforte courses under a Spanish music
teacher. He did not finish his education as he
became interested in the SARSWELA.
 As a musical director, he was involved in a
number of movies such as “Mabangong
Bulaklak”, “Ang Ibong Adarna”, “Mutya ng
Pasig”, and “Alitaptap”
 Francisco Buencamino died on the 16th of
october, 1952 in the same year, he was given a
posthumous Outstanding Composer Award by
the Manila Music Lover Society.
 Dr. Francisco Santiago was born on the 29th of
January, 1889 in Santa Marie, Bulacan,
Philippines. He was a composer, pianist,
teacher and film director. His parent were
Felipe and Marie Santiago. He married
Concepcion de Leon in 1923 and they had four
children.
 The young Francisco had his elementary
education at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran.
He finished high school at the Liceo de Manila.
When he was seven years old, he took piano
lessons from a private tutor. After three years,
he studied pianoforte under Blas Echegoyen,
and Primo Calzada. Because his family was
poor, he had to support himself throughout
school.
 Dr. Francisco Santiago died on the 28th of
September, 1947. He was posthumously given
the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award
by the City of Manila in 1968
 Rondolfo S. Cornejo, a composer, pianist and
conductor, was born on the 15th of May, 1909,
in Manila. His parents are Miguel Cornejo, Sr.
and Crisanta Soldevilla. In 1949, he married
Nieves Guerrero, a lyric soprano. The couple
had five children.
 Rondolfo Cornejo started piano lessons with
Gelacio Reyes at age six. At age of eight, he had
his first recital, and he became the organist of
the Pasay Catholic Church.
 In the Philippines, he became director of the
Cosmopolitan Colleges Conservatory of Music
from 1948 to 1949.
 Rondolfo S. Cornejodied in Manila on the 11th
oh August, 1991.
 Nicanor Santa Ana Abelardo was born on the
7th of Febuary, 1893 in San Miguel de Mayumo,
Bulacan. He was a composer, pianist and
teacher. He was the eldest of right children
born to Valentin Abelardo, a photographer,
and Placida Santa Ana, a church singer. His
father thaught him silfeggio and bandurria
when he was five. At six, he could already play
the William Tell Overture on the guitar.
 In 1916, he studied at the University of the
Philippines Conservatory of Music. While
there, he composed the ”U.P. Beloved”, a
school hymn which won first prize in an open
musical contest in 1917.
 After more than 140 works, Abelardo began to
ail. He died in 1934 leaving behind several
unfinished works.

 Felipe Padilla de Leon was born on the 1st of
May, 1912 in the barrio of Papaya (now
General Tinio) in Penaeanda, Nueva Ecija. He
is the son Juan de Leon and Natalia Padilla. He
is the third of four children by the second
marriage of his mother. Felipe de Leon married
pianist Iluminada Mendoza with whom he had
six children.
 Felipe P. De Leon wrote piano compositions,
hymns, marches, art songs, chamber music,
symphonic poems and overtures, band music,
school songs, orchestral works, kundimans and
sarswelas. Known as a nationalist composer,
he sought to express the Philippines cultural
identity through his compositions.
 Felipe De Leon died on the 5th of December,
1992.
