This document discusses GDOT's consultation with 18 federally-recognized tribes affiliated with Georgia. Due to forced removal in the 1830s, these tribes are now located in other states but maintain cultural affiliation with parts of Georgia. GDOT aims to meaningfully consult tribes on transportation projects that could affect historic properties. Recent efforts include holding intertribal meetings, using webinars and videos to engage tribes, and inviting tribal participation in archaeological mitigation projects. Future goals include formalizing consultation protocols and increasing tribal youth involvement in mitigation.
