Derek Roberts selects wood and prepares the plates for a violin. He flattens and joints the front and back plates from spruce and maple. Derek then glues blocks to a mould and shapes them. Rib structures are built up on the mould with bent maple ribs glued between the blocks. Linings are added to strengthen the ribs. Derek marks and saws out the back plates, rough arching them with gouges. He then marks, saws and arches the front plates. Derek also begins preparing the neck block from maple with carving of the scroll to follow later.
