Increased demand is being driven by a recovering commercial building sector
andlarge roadandinfrastructure projects.
Job prospects for construction workers are good over the next
few years, due to growing building activity in Auckland. Other
regions still have many opportunities.
Job Prospects
Opportunities have increased with the growth in
the number of construction and infrastructure
projects. Both professions can be affected by
economic conditions. A downturn in the economy
can lower demand for architects.
Cabinetmakers arein demand because ofhigh numbers of new house builds, andnew
renovations. We expect a small reduction over the next few years, with modest growthin this
industry over the longer term.
9
The construction boom that will last for another few
years means that there are plenty of opportunities for
bricklayers, particularly in Auckland. Other regions still
have many opportunities.
There are good job prospects for carpenters and joiners over the
next few years, due to growing building activity in Auckland.
Other regions still have many opportunities.
Job Prospects
Demand is high in Auckland, where electricians are
needed for house building and commercial work.
Job prospects for painters and floor finishers are relatively good
over the next few years, due to growing building activity in
Auckland. Other regions still have many opportunities.
10
Demand for qualified plumbers and
gasfitters is growing and is likely to be
moderate to strong over the short to
medium term.
Prospects are good for quantity
surveyors in many parts of New
Zealand. Opportunities for quantity
surveyors are good due to a strong
residential building sector, and a stable
commercial (non-residential) building
sector.
There are good job prospects for
roofers and tilers over the next few
years, due to growing building activity in
Auckland. Other regions still have many
opportunities.
Job Prospects
Prospects for welders and metal workers are good.
Many existing workers are nearing retirement. There are
also opportunities for welders and metal workers in the
manufacturing industry throughout the country.
Prospects are good for urban planners, due to a
growth in the number of positions available and
supply of new graduates. Getting employment as an
urban planner is likely to be easier in Auckland than
in the rest of New Zealand.
11
 South Island - Commercial construction continues todominate, while the infrastructure sector remains strong and residential construction active thanks toincreased activity in
the retirement village sector andgrouphousing. Quantity Surveyors, Estimators, Project Managers, Site Managers, Carpenters, Tradespeople andForepersons areall in high
demand.
 Auckland - With the America’s Cupset tobe held in Auckland this year, the market will be active. The residential sector is buoyant and primarilydriven by asignificant housing
shortage while aged careproviders havebegun major projects in multiple locations aroundthe city.
 TheBay of PlentyandWaikato remain active due topopulation growthandregional investment. This has created high demand for Site Engineers, Project Engineers,
Commercial Project Managers, Quantity Surveyors andClient-Side Project Managers.
 In Dunedin, projects in the healthcare and education sectors will addtodemand for Quantity Surveyors, Project Managers andEstimators as well as alldisciplines in the
building trades.
 Wellington - Subcontractors arein high demand given increased residential growthresulting from KiwiBuild. Project Managers, SiteManagers and Quantity Surveyors are
in greatest demand due tothe sheer volume of demolition andearthquake strengthening work underway. CivilProject Managers with experience working on the tools are
needed. The Transmission Gully project has added tovacancy activity.
