While they were allies in WWII, they disagreed on economic systems and influence after the war. This led to proxy wars as they tried to spread capitalism and communism without direct conflict that could result in nuclear war. The USSR collapsed in the 1990s due to economic and social issues. This caused tensions with Russia over Ukraine's desire to join the EU rather than align with Russia, leading to protests, clashes, and Russia annexing Crimea.
Russia Ukraine war: A deep rooted enmity
The Russia-Ukraine war has been a longstanding and complex issue, rooted in historical tensions and geopolitical power struggles. The entire world was shocked on 24 Feb, 2022. I remember, it was Tuesday when news said Vladimir Putin claimed to commence a “special military operation”, thereby beginning a never-ending power clash or, in simpler terms, Russia Ukraine war. The Ukraine-Russia conflict began in 2013 when Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych decided not to sign a trade deal with the European Union and instead accepted a Russian bailout, sparking mass protests. In 2014, Yanukovych was removed from office by parliament and fled to Russia. Russia then seized control of Crimea and backed separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine. The US and EU imposed economic sanctions on Russia in response, and tensions escalated further after MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine. Ukraine remains divided between pro-Russian eastern regions and the west which favors integration with the EU, while a resolution to the ongoing conflict remains elusive.

- 1. The Conflict in Ukraine Mark Kachai
- 2. About my topic My research topic is about the conflict that Ukraine is facing. More specifically, I will be writing about the events that led up to the illegal Russian occupation of certain parts of Ukraine which will lead me into why Ukraine and Ukrainians should associate themselves more with Europe. My goal is to learn more about why it’s so hard for Ukraine to become more associated with Europe. With that said, I will be investigating the reasons why Russia doesn’t want Ukraine to become a member of the EU and the hardships that Ukraine has went through, and is still going through, to maintain its freedom and preserve its nationality.
- 3. History Ukraine has always faced problems with its status as an independent country. It’s problems are deep-rooted in the country’s extensive history. Looking at the past few decades though, Ukraine had gained its independence from the Soviet Union on August 24, 1991 and four months later on December 25, 1991, the Soviet Union fell, breaking off into fifteen separate countries (Ukraine being one of them). Although no longer affiliated with Russia, in 2013, Russia swayed the Ukrainian President’s decision to not join the European Union. This decision was followed by massive peaceful protests that turned violent when the Ukrainian riot police began attacking protesters to get them off the streets. These few months were known as the “Euromaidan”. After that, Russia took a series of actions that afflicted Ukraine even more.

- 5. Questions I have about the Ukraine becoming more oriented with Europe 1. How long will it take before Ukraine can try to become a member of the European Union again? 2. Will Russia back off of Ukraine even if they became part of the EU/NATO? 3. Why don’t most other European countries show public support for Ukraine, given that some of them used to be part of the Soviet Union and have dealt with Russia before? 4. Will fighting in eastern-Ukraine come to an end if Ukraine becomes a member of the European Union?
- 6. A viewpoint about Ukraine’s situation I disagree with The author of the article states that Ukraine shouldn’t try to push to be a part of NATO and other European outlets. He states that it would be more harmful than beneficial for Ukraine to become closer to Europe. I plan to refute the point that this author is trying to make, since I am basically writing about the opposite view he has, why Ukraine needs to push for more European integration. I plan on taking into consideration the points he makes, but ultimately, I want to show that my viewpoint is more sensical.
