DEVELOPING THE NEXT GENERATION OF
COMMUNITY SERVANT LEADERS
October 2015 – June, 2016
Registration No: 153-098 NPO
ABOUT CIPS
www.ciprojectsociety.org
Circle of Influence Projects Society (CIPS) is an incubatory organisation for high school students to run
small-scale social projects in their respective communities, using the simple, readily available resources at
their fingertips such as their schools. This platform affords students the opportunity to explore their own
interests, understand the communities they operate in and foster a culture of networking with other like-
minded youth. CIPS shares the vision of a youth that create a lasting footprint in the community, in which
they have the confidence and societal support to address any social problem and drive their part in the
overall quest for a peaceful and prosperous Southern Africa.
The flagship activity of CIPS is a 8-12 week long CIPS Program which serves as a springboard for high
school students to transform their ideas and desire to engage in the community into reality. CIPS supports
the students through guidance and mentorship for the entire duration of the program.. Using a toolkit
specifically designed for the CIPS Program, mainly comprising of BUILD©, an entrepreneurial model
developed by the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership at African Leadership Academy, along with
branded stationery and merchandise, the CIPS Program is a life-changing experience.
Students who are admitted into CIPS become known as CIPS Captains for a period of a year, after which
they may renew their membership or proceed to graduate as alumni. A student who becomes a CIPS
Captain makes a pledge of responsibility and commitment to positively impact their community. While the
CIPS Captains work on their projects individually, there will be a parallel space for them to collaborate
with other similar youth-led initiatives. CIPS is, figuratively, not an organisation which gives its members
the fish, the direct benefits of community involvement, but rather the fishing rod, so that they may
harness their own abilities to develop lifelong leadership skills.
CIPS is based in Johannesburg, South Africa with existing members in South Africa and Zimbabwe. It
aims to establish members throughout the 15 countries of the Southern African Development
Community (SADC) within the next 5 years.
INAUGURAL CIPS PROJECT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CLEANING
“If not Us , Who? If not Now,
When?”
www.ciprojectsociety.org
Taking responsibility of one’s circumstances is the base for creating positive outcomes for
ourselves and those around us. Only when we deliberately cultivate this attitude of living to
maximise the moment do we experience success not only in the extra-curricular context but also in
the academic space as well.
Key Features of CIPS
Recruitment Sessions
Prior to recruitment the CIPS team partners
with top-tier schools with whom they conduct
school visits with to introduce the CIPS
program to the student bodies. Online
sessions are available as an alternative to the
physical visits. Interested students apply online
filling in short questions that assess academic
performance, interest in community service
and area of passion. The recruitment window
is on a rolling-admissions basis.
CIPS Captain Projects
This is the flagship activity of CIPS. Admitted
CIPS Captains embark on a transformational
journey of identifying, understanding and
nurturing small scale projects oriented towards
positively impacting at least 100 people in the
community through a sustainable style.
Projects are determined through the passions
and creativity of the students. Benefiting from
the guidance and mentorship provided by the
CIPS team, students undergo experiential
learning, youthful networking and community
capacity building.
The BUILD© Model
A model designed by the Center of
Entrepreneurial Leadership at the African
Leadership Academy in Johannesburg, South
Africa which enables a simplified step-by
step-approach for the CIPS Captains. The
model is a life tool applicable to many
situations (academic, social etc.).
Branded Toolkit
It is necessary to keep the CIPS Captains
connected to the CIPS family after projects
commence. The Toolkit is a customised set
of merchandise and stationery to aid the
CIPS Captains and to foster a habit of
reflection. It is a comprehensive yet portable
package which instils a sense of innovation
CIPS aims to bring.
CIPS Captains Reunion
The project season culminates with a
celebration of the experience and bringing a
fusion of music, food, fashion and dance
that highlight the uniqueness of different
cultures from all over Southern Africa.
Circle Of Concern VS Circle Of Influence
It is essential to appreciate the external factors which affect us but are beyond our control (e.g.
parents’ finances, weather, exam question difficulty etc.) and to regulate our internal reactions
which we choose in response to the things that impact us (e.g. attitude, outlook, language,
personal actions etc.)
The Power Of Youth
The youth of today have an unmatched opportunity to create a world they want to live in. They
can dream big, take action and change the world by bringing positive change on a social scale.
The Power Of One
Youth who develop their value for social responsibility catalyse the actions of large groups and
become positive contributors to a peaceful society.
The Power of Collaboration
It takes more than an individual to change a generation’s attitude, and it is equally a marathon
and not a sprint. Collaboration is essential to foster a culture for achieving sustainable social
impact for Southern Africa as a region.
Entrepreneurship Is Key For Societal Growth
Developing the skill to look beyond existing constraints and to pursue opportunities to create
value will enable the youth to tackle the future.
