Generally used for commonly accepted compound nouns
which refer to familiar things
e.g. A waiting room ( the first noun used as a kind of adj/ so
singular only )
e.g. A police inspector
e.g. A water bottle
e.g. A bottle opener

E.g. a pencil case
Other relations include;
Where something is found (e.g. a garden chair )
When it is used ( e.g. morning coffee)
The thing it is part of ( e.g. a door handle)
Adjectival noun is singular( although this is a case for pencil )
5. Noun + ‘s/ s’+noun
Used for things loosely belonging to or related to people.
e.g. the school’s policy
e.g. my sister’s car
e.g. Peter's hair
e.g. the boys’ father
6. Noun + of + Noun
Used where no common compound exist.
For unit , parts and for certain fixed expressions.
e.g. the end of the film
e.g. a glass of milk
e.g. the corner of the street
Also used to describe things belonging to other things, not to named people.
7. Diff: meaning between N + of + N and N
+ N
A cup of tea = a cup
containing tea
A tea cup = a cup used
for tea

In some cases, N +s’/’s + N and N + of + N are both
used.
e.g. the decision of the author / the author’s decision
e.g. the publication of the book / the book ‘s
publication
