This case study documents a project between the West Virginia Department of Transportation District 4 and ASCOREL to implement an onboard truck scale. The DOT was previously unable to accurately track salt usage and ran out before expected one year. They installed an MC402 scale with printer in a new loader to track over 38,000 tons of salt used annually. After initial installation and calibration adjustment, the scale proved accurate to 0.5% and allowed the DOT to account for all salt used, closing their 5% tracking gap. Customer service from ASCOREL and the distributor was praised throughout the project.

In the past the DOT has used another company to stockpile their salt that is used to de ice the roads during the winter months. They have not been
able to accurately track where the salt has been distributed. At the end of the year they ran out of salt before they expected to.
Salt had been priced near $30/ton in years past. In 2008-09 the salt was closer to $125/ton. This one district uses over 38,000 tons of salt per season.
The district has just purchased a new Hyundai 730 loader. The loader is equipped with a parallel lift linkage and a tool carrier. With it and the MC402
they expect to close the 5% gap in expected vs real usage of salt that they have experienced.
The district will also use a contractor for some of the salt hauling. The weight tickets from the Ascorel Scale will be compared to the commercial
platform scales used to weight the contractors trucks.

In cab and hydraulic installations were simple and straight forward. The parallel lift linkage complicated the placement of the target and
proximity switches.
The loaders boom was very stiff during the initial installation. The machine has fewer than 10 hours on it when we did the install.

The scale we went with is produced by Ascorel. This scale is really easy
to use and gives us the ability to print receipts from the cab of the
loader and also keeps a running total of all salt loaded for our records.
The company that sold us the scale is Load Weight Management
Onboard Scales, and my contact is Don Brewer, ph. 937‐987‐1032, cell
937‐302‐8370. The customer service has been excellent throughout
the entire process of getting the scales.
After a follow up calibration adjustment done with technical support via phone.
The scale was found to be accurate to .5%. The calibration adjustment was
needed due to the loader being new and having been “broken in”. The scale
allowed WVDOT to accurately track more than 130,000 tons of salt this season.
Salt was 125.00USD/ton this season. Last year WVDOT could not track approx
5% of its salt used.
