DEGREES OF COMPARISON
Most adjectives have three different forms
to compare an object.
They are,
1. Positive degree
2. Comparative degree
3. Superlative degree
POSITIVE DEGREE
What is meant by ‘Positive
degree?’
Positive degree is an adjective
which is used to describe a simple
quality of a person or a thing.
Examples:
1. Kannan is a clever boy.
Clever- Positive degree
2. Iron is a useful metal.
Useful- Positive degree
COMPARATIVE DEGREE
Comparative degree is an
adjective which is used to
compare two persons or two
things or two groups.
Examples:
1. Kannan is taller than arun.
Taller- Comparative degree
2. Chennai is larger than Madhurai.
Larger- Comparative degree
SUPERLATIVE DEGREE
Superlative degree is an
adjective which is used to
compare a person or a thing
with a group.
Examples:
1. Mohan is the tallest boy in the class.
Tallest- Superlative degree
2. Rani is the cleverest of all girls in the class.
Cleverest- Superlative degree
3. Arun is the most active player.
Most active- Superlative degree
