Since 2005, Itasca has been one of the key contributors in the extensive research project on large open-pit stability, the Large Open Pit (LOP) project, initiated by the CSIRO Division of Exploration & Mining.
One of the central objectives in open pit mining is establishing reliable slopes; slopes that are predictable even in failure, in order to prevent severe consequences. Itasca has been an integral part in the study of the relation between rock mass strength and deformability, and slope failure mechanisms.
As part of the LOP project, Itasca developed a completely new software called Slope Model. The software uses the concept of the Synthetic Rock Mass (SRM) approach applied to the specific case of rock slopes. In practice, Slope Model allows a 3D sector of a rock slope to be interactively defined and simulated, or arbitrary pit geometry can be defined and imported. SRM allows movement on joints (sliding and opening) as well as fracture of intact rock. Thus, the large-scale rock mass behavior (which cannot be measured directly) is synthesized from the component behaviors (which can be measured).
Slope Model is designed to simulate rock masses in which overall failure is a combination of slip and opening on joints and intact-rock failure. Non-steady fluid flow and pressure within the network of joint segments and the rock matrix are modeled, and several aspects of fluid-rock interaction are represented, such as effective stress (for sliding behavior) and pressure response to slope deformation (e.g., bench removal).

Strong partnerships have been forged over the years with all the reputable
switchgear manufacturers. One of these partnerships is the CUBIC
System from Denmark, which is used exclusively for the LVS range of
switchboards.
The CUBIC system is franchised and supplied by SABELCO (Pty) Ltd in
South Africa. CUBIC was founded in 1973 based on a unique idea of a
modular system for the construction of electrical switchboards, specialising
in individually adapted enclosures for Power Distribution Boards, Motor
Control Centres, marine and general control panels. All products from
CUBIC have been tested and certified by several of the world’s most
recognised test laboratories, including South Africa (SABS / NETFA).

STEPHAN SMIT
Operations Director
Stephan joined LVS in June 2007 as the Engineering
Manager and was promoted to Operations Director of
Low Voltage Switchboards (Pty) Ltd in August 2008,
with a current shareholding of 18.5% in the company.
Stephan is responsible for all engineering and
production activities at the company.
Stephan started his career 19 years ago at the then
GEC Alstom Distribution Equipment Company as an
understudy of Leon Venter - CEO of LVS. His previous
experience includes Design/Sales Engineer at Sabelco
and Project Engineer at CHI Control for more than 5
years.
ISOBEL NGOSI
Non-Executive Director
Isobel J Ngosi is LVS’ Non-Executive Director. She
holds Diplomas in Business Management (UNISA) and
Financial Markets (Academy of Financial Markets). She
has held various positions with First National Bank and
Standard Bank over the last 16 years, therefore, has
extensive experience in the financial services industry.
An articulate and quick thinking lady who has a
natural flare for being able to communicate and build
relationships with potential clients. She is resourceful,
and willing to contribute ideas and professional opinion
to different projects. Her noteworthy accomplishments

Leon Venter founded & established Low Voltage
Switchboards(Pty)Ltd in 1998 and has guided it to

Leon’s experience includes positions at Barlow Heavy
Engineering, AEG-Telefunken and GEC-Alstom
In 1990 Leon earned a Diploma as a Member of the

Sales & Marketing Director
Rudi Barker joined LVS in 2002 as the Sales and
Marketing Director. Rudi has been actively involved in
the contracting business for more than 30 years. He
has many years of electrical engineering experience
and has participated in many strategic and prestigious
projects. He started his career at Iscor in 1972, in
1979 he joined Wolf Cranes and in 1986 he joined
Process Plant which was later acquired by IMS. The
IMS group expanded its business and later acquired
Aquazur a specialist in waste water treatment. Rudi
plays an important role in the success of LVS which has
now developed into one of the largest independent
panel manufacturers in South Africa.
SEIPATI RAKOMA
Non-Executive Director
Seipati is a Supply chain solutions executive with 15
years of work experience. She has a BCom and a
Bcom Honours in Transport Economics. She started
her career as a Supply chain management trainee
in 1999 at Nestle SA and in 2000, was promoted
to the position of Transport Manager. In 2002 she
joined Kinesis Logistics in the position of Transport
and Logistics manager. In 2006 she moved into
management consulting with a special focus on Supply
chain transformation projects at Accenture. She joined
the Omnia Group in 2009 as Group Transport Lead

Empowerment deal with Kwedzima (Pty) Ltd, a newly established 100% black
female empowered investment company. Founded in 2014, Kwedzima (Pty) Ltd
acquired a 26% stake in Low Voltage Switchboards (Pty) Ltd (LVS).

Black economic empowerment - or broad-based black
economic empowerment, as it is technically known - is
not affirmative action, although employment equity

A motor control centre (MCC) consists of a number
of electric motor starters grouped together in a
central assembly. This ensures safe operation and
control & maintenance of the motors, their related
switchgear as well as the plant process.

A containerised motor control centre utilises
an extensively modified marine container to
accommodate the assembly, serving as a more
versatile and cost-effective sub-station.

Logic Controllers & Automation systems encompass

that operate on low voltage/current which can be
affected by heavy-current switchgear and as a result
are generally housed separately.

Electronic motor starters, due to their component
nature, generate large amounts of heat. When of a
large rating, these need to be accommodated in their

13. CONTROL DESKS & GENERAL CONTROL PANELS
A control desk is a remote operating station, generally in a control-room which is removed from the plant-
process. From the control desks an operator is able to perform many of the required functions.
General Control Panels are used for controlling one or two functions in remote areas in a plant such as a small
pump and cooling fan with automatic ‘stop/start’ functions.

A Power Distribution board is where the main
incoming electrical supply enters a plant or

14. Low Voltage Switchboards was appointed by Ovivo Aqua SA as the EPC Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Contractor for the Water and Waste Water Treatment Plants on the
KHI and KAXU Solar Plants in the Northern Cape of South Africa. The plants extract raw water from the Orange River and produce different stages of water quality for use on the
Solar Plants, where the final stage is demineralized water that is used for the steam in the generator turbines.

15. Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has commissioned a new CO2
concentration
unit at its Newcastle production site in South Africa.
The company operates a highly modern plant at the site for the production of sodium
dichromate, which is mainly further processed into chrome tanning materials for the
global leather industry. The plant is the only one of its kind in South Africa.
The production technology requires a continuous supply of highly concentrated CO2
,
which the new unit will provide.
Low Voltage Switchboards (Pty) Ltd was responsible for the entire EC&I turnkey
solution - design, supply, installation, commissioning and final handover.

16. POWER PLANTS
Low Voltage Switchboards was appointed by Cross PE on behalf of Group Five as the EC&I design engineers for the Kuvaninga Power Plant located in the Chokwe (region),
Mozambique. The Kuvaninga Power Station, consists of 10-off (GE Jenbacher) gas-engine driven generators, each of rating 11kV, 4.035MWe, 5.036MVA, 0.8pf, with an estimated
maximum output, less station auxiliaries, of 38.5MWe. The generators will operate in parallel on the station main 11kV switchboard. The 55MVA transformer raises the station bus
voltage to 110kV for connection to the Mozambique grid (EDM).
The following scope of work was completed by Low Voltage Switchboards (Pty) Ltd:
• Medium Voltage Reticulation for all generators to the Main 55MVA evacuation transformer as well as auxiliary supplies
• Low Voltage Reticulation for all the engine auxiliaries and lighting and small power
• Specifications for all MV and LV equipment. These include specifications for 55MVA transformer, Auxiliary Transformers, MV Switchgear, NECRT, Surge Arrestors,

19. The progress ofa societydepends on the businesses that thrive in its environment,
the success of a business depends on the stability of that society.
Following this ideology, LVS fulfils its Corporate Social Responsibility along two
broad parameters. The first is by directly contributing to individuals and to our
local area.
This includes paying school fees, supplying all required uniforms and stationery
as well as covering the transportation costs for six previously disadvantaged
children. LVS has also placed crime reporting boards at Aston Manor Pick n Pay,
Norkem Park Mall and Bonaero Park in the hope that this will not only notify
people of crime in the area, but hopefully reduce the crime in these areas as well.
The second is by supporting institutions and organisations that are committed
towards improving the wellbeing, health and safety of our society. LVS currently
