1. Community water purification system
Abstract
Approximately 170 million people in India lack access to safe, clean drinking water. According
to the WHO report, around 37.7 million Indians are affected by waterborne diseases annually,
1.5 million children are estimated to die of diarrhea alone and 73 million working days are lost
due to waterborne disease each year. Families, especially women and girls, spend long hours
collecting water from local sources, and end up with water that is unsafe for consumption.
The problem is severe in rural areas. Safe drinking water is a key development issue in India,
where only 18 percent of rural households have access to clean water and 21 percent of
communicable diseases are water-related. Barriers to improving access to water services in these
rural areas include geographical remoteness, dispersed population, lack of knowledge and
awareness among rural communities and high rates of illiteracy.
The organizations involved in community water purification are trying to overcome the above
mentioned issues through their innovative models.
This sector recently has seen a steady growth in the number of for profit organizations. They are
working towards providing scalable, safe and affordable water solutions to the underserved
through innovative business models.
We intend to understand and analyze the working of few of the players involved in this business.
Our tentative plan is to analyze the following models:

Byraju Foundation
The objective of our term paper is to understand the following:
