2. OBJECTIVES
a. Compare and contrast comets,
meteors and asteroids.
b. Identify the different
components present in comets,
meteors and asteroids by
filling in a Venn Diagram.
c. Value the importance of
comets, asteroids and meteors.
10. Directions: Fill in the Venn diagram by identifying the different
components present in comets, meteors, and asteroids from the
box below. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.
Comets
Meteors
Asteroids
11. Clues: At the intersection of the circles, write the
components that are both presenting the two
circles from the two Near-Earth Objects
mentioned. At the center, write the components
that are common from comets, meteors, and
asteroids.
metals silicates dusts rocks
ice Iron Nickel
Ammonia
flame Carbon dioxide Sodium
Argon
12. Comets are icy balls of gas or
dust. They are the remains or
materials that were not used in
the formation of the outer
planets. Some comets can be
found beyond the orbit of
Neptune while others can be
found beyond the orbit of Pluto.
COMETS
13. ASTEROIDS
Asteroids are chunks of rocks
found between the orbits of Mars
and Jupiter. Asteroids are of
varied shapes and sizes.
They are the remains or
materials that were not used in
the formation of the inner
planets.
14. METEOROIDS
Meteoroids are fragments
of a comet when it breaks
up as it passes near the
Sun. It can also be
fragments from the
collision of two asteroids.
16. METEORITE
If a meteor is big enough
to withstand the friction
with the Earth’s
atmosphere and reaches
the surface, it is called a
Meteorite.
17. “Do you know at least one
superstitious belief or practice
related to Comets, Asteroids and
Meteors?” Perform the assigned
activity in line with the different
superstitious beliefs.
Each performance must last for
only 5 minutes.
18. You are free to choose what
task to be accomplished
based on your learning
preference.
(Note: The number of
students per group will not
matter since they will
accomplish a task according
19. 1.We sort of believe that stars
falling from the sky are a
good omen: we wish upon a
star and hope our lives will
get even better.
(Dance Number)
20. 2. Some people collect
meteorites because they are
fascinating and many other
cultures have been known to
worship these ‘heavenly gifts”.
In the old days, meteorites were
often used for building sacred
temples.
(Role Playing)
21. 3. In 1665, about a quarter of London’s
population was killed by “The Black
Death”, also known as The Plague. One
year later, The Great Fire of London
ruined the lives of many and left the
city in ashes. The comets that were
spotted in 1664 and 1665 were later
seen as a prophecy of these terrible
events, which is why these “omens from
the skies” were feared by many in the
17th Century. (News Casting)
22. 4. It is believed that
the appearance of
comets is a sign for
the end of the world.
