The document is a column by Curt MacRae where he discusses coping with the current crisis and looks forward to a return to normalcy. He encourages readers to work together, help each other out, and demand cooperation from leaders. MacRae expresses optimism that if people make sacrifices now by following guidelines, then activities and gatherings will be able to resume, schools and businesses will reopen, and life will get back to normal. He also calls for reducing party loyalty and prioritizing the interests of the country during and after this crisis.

Today, I would like to ask the question “Are some people too stupid to get ahead?” In a speech to the Centre for Policy Studies think-tank in London Boris Johnson, London mayor said he don’t believe economic equality will ever be possible because some people are too stupid to get ahead in the modern world.

To understand the changes that are taking place in the workplace, one important factor to consider is the different generations. There are always exceptions to the rule, but I am referring to some general characteristics of a few generations that had an impact in the business world.
My parents’ generation—mostly baby boomers—were raised, for the most part, to follow a very clear, straight path. That path was to get an education, get married, and find a decent job to pay the bills. Many of them had the same job for more than 20 years and retired. They mostly viewed their “jobs” as just a means to make money and they did not question whether it was fulfilling or not. This was life as it was defined for them. It was selfish to think otherwise. They worked for money, and were respectful of and obedient to authority. They were grateful to have a job, especially one that many would desire. This was the mindset at the time. The companies gave them a feeling of stability; they invested in their people and were relatively loyal. Their generation also fought for some human rights and paved the way for a better world. I am grateful for that.
My generation started asking deeper questions. Is there a better life somewhere else? Do I feel fulfilled in my job where I spend 40-50 hours a week? How on earth am I supposed to act differently at work and in my personal life? Is this the life I want? It did not always feel right just to have a job. We started looking for fulfillment in our lives. The conventional path did not satisfy us. We started taking more risks. It was painful for our parents to watch us leave “stable” jobs as they saw it just because we did not find enough meaning or because our values were conflicting with the company goals.
In the meantime, some corporations started changing too. When they were striving to be the best place to work, proud to offer the best salaries, and hiring and retaining the most qualified employees, at some point, they decided to only pay attention to their shareholders. They lost touch with their clients and their employees. Employees became merely numbers or machines. They forgot that the only things that matter are human beings; the people working for them, the people who will buy their services, and their communities. They stopped being inspiring and felt like their employees needed them more than they did. It started becoming very easy to let go of people. Many of us experienced in many occasions that getting rid of office furniture in an office was harder to get rid of than employees. Even when businesses genuinely had to downsize to survive (I am not denying businesses exist to make money and there are times you need to let people go), they forgot to acknowledge their employees for all their hard work and accomplishments. People were treated like stuff.
The only things that matter are human beings;.

In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

Welcome to the new Mizzima Weekly !
Mizzima Media Group is pleased to announce the relaunch of Mizzima Weekly. Mizzima is dedicated to helping our readers and viewers keep up to date on the latest developments in Myanmar and related to Myanmar by offering analysis and insight into the subjects that matter. Our websites and our social media channels provide readers and viewers with up-to-the-minute and up-to-date news, which we don’t necessarily need to replicate in our Mizzima Weekly magazine. But where we see a gap is in providing more analysis, insight and in-depth coverage of Myanmar, that is of particular interest to a range of readers.

Column the good ol' days will come back
1. The Good Ol’ Days are Ahead
MacCrabby Rants -- BY: Curt MacRae
First, a personal note: Today’s column marks two years of ranting. Thank you to the editorial staff of
this newspaper for allowing 50 columns of rants, so far. I’ve received comments from many readers –
thank you. For the rest, email anytime – maccrabby@gmail.com.
Today’s column will have no campaigning, even though MacCrabby is still running for president.
We’ll get back to it, but…
Remember January?? When the stock market was booming, when we were getting together with
friends, when our sports teams were getting ready for the playoffs or tournament runs? Remember
shaking hands? Restaurants? Remember smiles?
Be assured; it’ll come back. And part of coping with what our country, our world, is going through
now, is to trust ourselves, our leaders, our peers to do the right things for the good of all.
And the other part of dealing with crisis is to be there for others. We’ll be OK. But maybe you should
only buy three hand-sanitizers, and less than a gross of toilet paper, so someone else can get some.
And when you hear, “I’m not going to let this make me a prisoner in my own home” (akin to “not
letting the terrorists win” after 9-1-1) remind that person that we’re only being asked to stay home for
a while. You’ll get out again to see friends, to have dinner, to see a movie and to socially un-
distance. Let’s share responsibility now for the good of all, down the road.
And let’s encourage our leaders to work together for once, because we need that. Let’s hope that
our president quits blaming past administrations and that our senators and congresspeople can put
party aside, instead of looking for a soundbite to make the news.
And maybe they’ll do what’s best for the country. Maybe this is what will bring us together. Maybe.
We’re already doing some good things. Private sector companies have been enlisted to provide
services and to implement new processes – that’s good. And, medical experts now seem to be
influencing policy. The economic impact is being examined and hopefully can be addressed, at least
partially. Congress cancelled their March vacation. While party interaction remains strained, a crisis
requires coordination. We should demand that, and not just for this crisis.
So, let’s turn to one another – maybe not in person, since many of us are social-distancing and self-
quarantining. But let’s pull together, sacrifice together, empathize with others, root for us all. Let’s
realize that some need help and let’s try to help. Let’s demand that our leaders put right and left aside
and root for US. Let’s all think “we” instead of “me.”
So, shut it down; shut it all down. Let’s get through it, keep our people alive, and then get back to
normal. Schools will reopen, stocks will rebound, concerts will return, sports will restart, and we’ll all
2. get together again. We’ll cruise, fly, go to Disneyworld and get back to the gym. Life will return to
normal, IF we all suck it up now and do the right things – ALL of us. Don’t be selfish, and don’t defy
guidelines that have already been set. Protect yourself and that will protect us all.
We’ll come back; we always do. But, let’s take the opportunity to change for the better. Let’s reduce
party-loyalty and initiate country-loyalty. And, not just for this crisis, but for our future.
One more request – each time the media talks about protecting the elderly, perhaps they could not
mention that the cut-off age for elderly is 60 – ouch!! Remember, 60 is the new-50… or 40
Good luck to us.
