Research in Motion (RIM) was founded in 1984 and launched the first Blackberry device in 1996. It dominated the business smartphone market with the secure Blackberry network. However, RIM struggled in recent years as the iPhone and Android gained popularity. Losing market share and facing financial losses, RIM laid off over 2,000 employees in 2011 as its stock price dropped significantly. The company hopes its new products and leadership can help it transition successfully in the increasingly competitive mobile market.

This document is the October 2010 issue of CONSENSUS magazine, which is published by the Standards Council of Canada.
The issue discusses several ongoing standards development initiatives in Canada, including the development of the world's first standard for the geological storage of carbon dioxide through a partnership between the International Performance Assessment Centre for Geologic Storage of Carbon Dioxide and the Canadian Standards Association. It also discusses efforts to develop standards to support the growing natural gas vehicle industry in Canada. Additionally, it notes the lack of comprehensive product safety standards in Canada and calls for increased standards development to protect consumer health and safety.
The Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) aims to build a sustainable development technology infrastructure in Canada. It provides funding to clean technology projects in the development and demonstration phases to help de-risk technologies for private sector investment. SDTC has approved 75 projects totaling $169 million in funding that is expected to leverage $446 million from project partners and reduce emissions by 12.5 million tonnes annually by 2010.

Business use of information and communications technology produces 2% of the world's carbon dioxide emissions, which is equivalent to the airline industry. Schools in England emit over 8.5 million tons of carbon dioxide per year. Transitioning to more environmentally friendly hardware, implementing power management and virtualization technologies, and establishing a culture of sustainability can help reduce schools' carbon footprints. British Gas has also initiated a program to donate solar panels to schools to generate clean energy.

The document summarizes a presentation given at the 2009 MEP National Conference on climate change and its implications for US industry. The presentation discussed how climate change science shows emissions this decade have been worse than expected and inaction will lead to significant warming in the US. It outlined policies being pursued by lawmakers to cap greenhouse gas emissions and transition to renewable energy. The presentation argued this transition creates business opportunities for manufacturers in areas like renewable energy components and argued MEP centers should help clients reduce costs and emissions to position themselves for growing green markets.
The Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) aims to build a sustainable development technology infrastructure in Canada. It operates as an early stage venture capital fund focusing on clean technologies, providing solutions to environmental issues. It invests in technology demonstration and commercialization consortia containing private sector entities. GLA's technology applies hydrogen production to diesel engines to dramatically reduce fuel usage and emissions. It works by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen gases, which are then injected into the engine intake manifold. GLA has developed a plug-and-play system for large diesel applications that is reliable with low maintenance. The company is seeking funding to establish safety standards, pursue regulatory compliance, and expand marketing to realize the technology's potential for reducing emissions on a large scale.
