Colonial Brazil lasted over 300 years and relied on slaves to extract brazilwood, produce sugar, and mine gold. In 1494, Portugal claimed Brazil and began extracting brazilwood from the rainforest for its wood and red dye. In 1808, Prince João allowed direct commercial relations between Brazil and other countries like England, breaking the colonial pact that previously limited Brazil's trade to just Portugal.
