without a touch of fear (Janowitz). Words perhaps not commonly used to describe
Alfred Hitchcocks classic which is nearing its fifty fifth birthday. Yet, the campy,
middle aged, prototypal film remains unsettling, frightening, and substantially
sublime. Therefore, what exactly cements this film in infamy? What makes its
presence essential to the libraries of eco critic s far and wide? Well, The Birdsutilizes
Hitchcock s crafty use of common cinematic techniques to conjure a sustaining sense
of sublimity; the bird s infiniteness, their bouts of terrorism, and their symbolism
illustrates several character s conflicts and loss of power permeating throughout the
