This study used methylation microarray analysis to examine DNA methylation levels in liver samples from patients with biliary atresia compared to disease and non-disease controls. They found global DNA hypomethylation in biliary atresia samples. Genes in the Hedgehog signaling pathway, known to be upregulated in biliary atresia, were hypomethylated. A region near the PDGFA gene locus showed the most significant hypomethylation in biliary atresia samples.
