1. CODE OF PHARMACEUTICAL ETHICS

2. INTRODUCTION
• Ethics means rules for ideal human conduct and law are
used for regulating human and for satisfying individual
requirement of society.
• Pharmaceutical ethics means rules and moral guidance
for the pharmacist to conduct their professional practice.
• Code of pharmaceutical ethics are formulated by
Pharmacy council of India which are meant to guide
pharmacist as to how he should conduct himself with his
profession, with general public, with co-professional etc.
• Pharmacist must have the attitude of service under
scarifies humanity.

3. CODE OF ETHICS
According to pharmaceutical ethics the following points
are noted for pharmacist as framed by PCI.

4. PHARMACIST IN RELATION TO HIS JOB
Following are the things which a pharmacist should
keep in mind while dealing in relation to his job.
1. SCOPE OF PHARMACEUTICAL SERVICES:
When the premises are registered and opened as a
pharmacy should provide complete pharmaceutical
services. It involve the supply of commonly required
medicine without delay.
It also involve willingness to provide all type emergency
services.

5. 2. CONDUCT OF THE PHARMACY
The pharmacy should be in such condition that the risk of
accidental contamination in the preparation, dispensing
and supply of medicine should be avoided.
The professional character of pharmacy is reflected by the
appearance of the premises that it should be clear to the
public .
The size ,design of notices and related indication should
be kept under control.
The premises should display notice that the pharmacy is
carried out under a registered pharmacist or registered
medical practitioner.

6. 3. HANDLING OF PRESCRIPTION
A pharmacist should receive a prescription presented to
him for dispensing it without any discussion or comment
over it as regards the merits and demerits of its
therapeutic efficiacy.
The pharmacist should not show any strange expression
upon prescription as it may cause any anxiety in patients.
Careful handling is needed in answering any question on a
prescription.
The pharmacist should neither add, omit or substitute any
ingredients to the prescription without consent of
prescriber.
In case of obvious error due to omission or incompatibility
or overdose ,the prescription should referred back to the
prescriber.
The pharmacist should follow the instruction of prescriber
and advice patients to use medicine as per the
prescription.

7. 4. HANDLING OF DRUG
A prescription should always be dispensed correctly and
carefully by weighing and measuring all ingredients in
correct proposition by means of scales and measures.
Substandard and unethical preparation s should never be
used to fill the preparations.
Only drugs and medicinal preparations of standard
quality should always be used.
A pharmacist should law full or obey full while dealing
with poisonous drug and additional medical preparation.
Such drug should not be supplied to any one without
knowing the appropriate reasons.

8. 5. APPRENTICE PHARMACIST
While the in-charge of drug store and hospital
pharmacy ,were apprentice pharmacists are admitted
for practical training
The pharmacist should see that they are provided full
facilities for their work that after completion of their
training ,they have sufficient technique or skill to make
themselves dependable pharmacist.
No certificate should be granted if the above criteria is
not attend.

9. Pharmacist in relation to his trade
1. Price structure
Price charged from customers should be fair and in
keeping with the quality and quantity of commodity
supplies and the labour and skill required in making it
ready for use, so as to ensure an adequate
remuneration to the pharmacist taking into
consideration his knowledge, skill, the time without
unduly taxing the purchaser.

10. 2. Fair trade practice
No attempt should be made to capture the business of a
contemporary by cut-throat competition, that is, by
offering any sort of prizes or gifts or any kind of
allurement to patronizers or by knowingly charging lower
prices for medical commodities than those charged by a
fellow pharmacist if they be reasonable.
In case any order or prescription genuinely intended to be
served by some dispensary is brought by mistake to
another, the latter should be refuse to accept it and should
direct the customer to the right place.
Labels, trademarks and other signs and symbols of
contemporaries should not be imitated or copied.

11. 3. Purchase of drugs
Drugs should always be purchased from genuine and
reputable sources.
Pharmacist should always be on his guard not to aid or
abet, directly or indirectly the manufacture, possession,
distribution and sale of spurious or sub-standard drugs.
4. HAWKINGOF DRUGS
Hawking of drugs and medicinals should not be encouraged
nor should any attempt be made to solicit orders for such
substances from door to door.
Self-service method of operating pharmacies and drug-
stores should not be used as this practice may lead to the
distribution of therapeutic substances without an expert
supervision and thus would encourage self-medication,
which is highly undesirable.

12. 5. ADVERTISING AND DISPLAYS
No display material either on the premises, in the press
or elsewhere should be used by a pharmacist in
connection with the sale to the public of medicines or
medical appliances which is undignified in style or which
contains:
Any wording design or illustration reflecting unfavorably
on pharmacist collectively or upon any group or
individual.
A disparaging reference, direct of by implication to other
suppliers, products, remedies or treatments.
Misleading, or exaggerated statements or claims.
The word “Cure” in reference to an ailment or symptoms
of ill-health.
A guarantee of therapeutic efficacy.

13. PHARMACIST IN RELATION TO HIS PROFESSION
Extend help in fellow pharmacist in emergency need.
Should maintain standard of the profession.
Should try to weed out corruption in profession and
society.
He should not be afraid of bringing or causing a miscreant
to be brought to book, may be a membrane of his own
profession.
Should have up to date knowledge of profession matters.
Should have fair knowledge of laws related to his
profession.

14. Pharmacist in relation to medical profession
1. LIMITATION OF PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
Pharmacist under no circumstances, take to medical
practice i.e, diagnosing drug and prescribing drug and
prescribing medicines. In emergency he can give first aid
to the person. Should not recommend a medical
practitioner.
2. CLANDESTINE ARRANGEMENT
No pharmacist should enter into the secret arrangement
and contract with the physician to offer him any
commission or any other advantage.

15. 3. Liaison withpublic
Being a liaison between medical profession and people, a
pharmacist will always keep himself updated with the
modern development of pharmacy by regular reading of
books, magazines etc.
A pharmacist should never disclose any information,
which he has acquired during his professional activities to
any third party or person, unless required to do so by law.
He should never betray the confidence which his patrons
repose in him or which he has won by virtue of his
eminent character and conduct.

16. Pharmacist’s oath
• I swear by the code of ethics of Pharmacy Council of
India, in relation to the community and shall act as an
integral part of health care team.
• I shall uphold the laws and standards governing my
profession.
• I shall strive to perfect and enlarge my knowledge to
contribute to the advancement of pharmacy and public
health.
• I shall follow the system which I consider best for
Pharmaceutical care and counseling of patients.
• I shall endeavor to discover and manufacture drugs of
quality to alleviate sufferings of humanity.

17. • I shall hold in confidence the knowledge gained about
the patients in connection with my professional
practice and never divulge unless compelled to do so
by the law.
• I shall associate with organizations having their
objectives for betterment of the profession of
• Pharmacy and make contribution to carry out the
work of those organizations.
• While I continue to keep this oath unviolated, May it
be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of
pharmacy respected by all, at all times!
• Should I trespass and violate this oath, may the
reverse be my lot!
