The Federal government launched Apps.gov, an online storefront for approved cloud computing applications available to federal agencies. The goal is to streamline adoption of applications across agencies by allowing them to pay only for what they use, similar to utilities. Vivien Kundra, the US Federal CIO, noted cloud computing allows flexible scaling of resource use as needs change. Apps.gov sets a precedent for other governments to provide centralized access to cloud-based applications.
