Tasting Room Questions
Question: What are AVAs?
Answer: AVA stands for American Viticultural Area. These are the areas in Washington
that are designated regions for growing grapes specifically for wine. There are 13 AVAs
in Washington.
2140 Wine Country Rd., ProsserWA 99350 509-786-1000 www.theclorecenter.org
Question: What are the 13 AVAs?
Answer: The 13 AVAs in Washington are Ancient Lakes, Columbia Cascade, Columbia
Gorge, Horse Heaven Hills, Lake Chelan, Naches Heights, Puget Sound, Rattlesnake
Hills, Red Mountain, Snipes Mountain, Wahlukle Slope, Walla Walla Valley and Yakima
Valley.
Question: Why does the Clore Center showcase AVAs in the Tasting Room?
Answer: Focusing on an AVA in the Tasting Room allows the Clore Center to promote
Washington Wine and specific wine versus individual wineries. This also allows us to
spread knowledge of the grape, soil, climate, elevation and slope in which the wine
comes from.
Question: What are the hours of the Tasting Room?
Answer: Our Tasting Room is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Question: What is the cost to attend a tasting in the Tasting Room?
Answer: We charge a $5 non-refundable fee per guest in the Tasting Room for the wine.
Small snacks and appetizers are available for an additional charge.
Question: Do you take reservations in the Tasting Room?
Answer: Yes. We especially appreciate a phone call in advance if you have a group of 10
or more. Private tastings after-hours are also available.
Question: Are there any other refreshments offered with the wine tasting?
Answer: Our Tasting Room has a small menu Friday-Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Glass pours, bottle purchases and bottled beer are also offered. These snacks are
available at an additional charge and prepared by Chef Kristin Martilla Johnson.
Question: Do you always feature the same wine or AVAs in your Tasting Room?
2140 Wine Country Rd., ProsserWA 99350 509-786-1000 www.theclorecenter.org
Answer: No. We choose a new AVA each month and this also changes our wine line-up.
Our mission is to promote Washington Wine and we do this by allowing our visitors to
discover a new winery, region or varietal to enjoy each time they visit.
Question: What are the upcoming AVAs for the Tasting Room?
Answer: This month we are featuring the Walla Walla Valley region. In April we will
showcase Lake Chelan. The month of May will present the Columbia Gorge. June is
expected to introduce the Red Mountain area. For July, we have Horse Heaven Hills
planned.
Question: What are the student wines?
Answer: A few colleges in Washington have student wine programs that produce
different varieties. These colleges include Washington State University, Yakima Valley
Community College, Walla Walla Community College and South Seattle Community
College.
Blind Tasting Questions
Question: What are blind tastings?
Answer: Blind tastings offer an experience to be had without knowing the winemaker,
winery, price or seeing the label. This allows individuals to develop a palate, discover
new wines and make a decision without other influences.
Question: When are blind tastings offered?
Answer: On the first Thursday of every month from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. we will offer blind
tasting of a specific varietal.
Question: What are the varietals for the blind tastings?
2140 Wine Country Rd., ProsserWA 99350 509-786-1000 www.theclorecenter.org
Answer: For this month we have Malbec being showcased. In April, Albariño will be
presented. The month of May is expected to introduce Mourvedre. June is featuring
Lemberger while July has Barbera planned. August will not have a blind tasting event
due to our Legends Event and the Prosser Wine and Food Festival. September will offer
Tempranillo. In October, Syrah will be showcased. November is featuring Cabernet
Franc and December is scheduled for Riesling.
Question: How much do blind tastings cost?
Answer: Tickets for the blind tasting event are $30. This includes appetizers and six
wines to sample.
Legends of Washington Wine Questions
Question: What is the Legends of Washington Wine Hall of Fame?
Answer: The Legends of Washington Wine Hall of Fame is a bronze medal that is
commissioned to an individual and remains on display at the Clore Center.
Question: How do you become a Legend of Washington Wine?
Answer: Once a year, a Washington resident with more than 25 years of involvement in
the wine industry is nominated and awarded at the gala in August.
Question: Who chooses the winner out of the nominees to be the Legend of Washington
Wine?
Answer: A selection committee considers all of the nominee’s impact on the wine
industry, contributions to the community and their historical lasting significance for
future generations. The selection committee includes a representative from each of the
state’s viticultural regions who independently review and rate nominees.
