UP hyper-endemic for dengue; few sporadic cases of Chikungunya till 2016
Aim: To examine trends in clinical manifestations, demographic profile &
seropositivity of CHK

• Study Design: Retrospective observational
• Setting: Dept. of Microbiology, KGMU (Ethics
Committee approved)
• 24% seropositivity; male: female cases = 1:0.9
• Total cases, seropositive cases & seropositivity,
all peaked in 2016 (1389, 412, 30%) & 2017
(1619, 341, 21%).
Inclusion Criteria
Patients tested by ELISA for Anti
CHK IgM antibody (NIV Pune Kit)
from Sep 2012 to Dec 2017 &
informed consent obtained
Exclusion criteria
Serological data of patient missing.

• Post-monsoon (Aug–Nov) peak in cases.
• Seropositivity highest in arthralgia pt. (40%),
then Pyrexia of Unknown Origin PUO (22%)
encephalitis (13%), fever with Rash (12%).
• Seropositivity highest in ages 45-60 (38%).
• Shift in affliction towards paediatric ages in
2017 esp. encephalitic manifestation.
Conclusions
• CHK outbreak in UP for 1st time in 2016.
• Encephalitis is uncommon presentation of
CHK esp. in children.
• CHK as a DDx NOT to be ignored in North
Indian patient with PUO &/or encephalitis.
