CLIMATE CHANGE
BY: ZAC LEITH
THE FIRST OCCURRENCE OF GLOBAL WARMING
The term global warming first appeared in a science magazine
article called “Climate Change: Are We on the Brink of a
Pronounced Global Warming?” The article was written by
geochemist Wallace Brocker.
POSSIBLE
CAUSES OF
CLIMATE
CHANGE
• To much greenhouse gas
• Deforestation
• Volcanic eruptions
• Certain types of agriculture
THE GREENHOUSE
EFFECT
The greenhouse effect is
what keeps our planet warm.
Without it the temperature
would go below freezing
every night. Some scientists
believe that this happening
except with more green
house gas is what causes
global warming. This excess
greenhouse could be the
problem that eventually
sends us into the an earth
unable to sustain humans.
DEFORESTATION
Usually our large forests
will soak up all of the
carbon dioxide, but with
our need to expand due to
more population. We
destroy the forests that
provide us with oxygen and
keep are air clean. By
killing these trees we could
be unbalancing the
greenhouse effect.
VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS
When volcanos erupt they
disperse gasses and dust
particles. These particles
can block out the sun
shading from the solar
radiation. Causing a
cooling effect that can last
for months even years.
Volcanic eruptions could
also cause global warming
by letting out greenhouse
gasses.
AGRICULTURE
Agriculture plays a role in
climate change when
industrialized farmers use
certain fertilizers. These
fertilizers let out a
greenhouse gas called
nitrous oxide that could be
even worse that carbon
dioxide.
EFFECTS OF
CLIMATE
CHANGE
Already happening:
• Loss of ice caps in the arctic
• Loss of permafrost in the arctic
• Sea level rising
Possible soon:
• Loss of natural wonders(rainforests coral reefs
etc.)
MELTING ICE CAPS
In the arctic there are ice
caps in the water that have
become an icy bedrock
over thousands of years.
Scientists have been
studying them and have
noticed that over the past
decade the ice caps have
been decreasing in size at
an alarming rate. At this
rate scientists say by 2030
we could have an ice free
winter in the arctic.
THE LOSS OF
PERMAFROST
The permafrost is melting
causing buildings to sink
into the ground in Canada,
Alaska where they used to
have solid ground. Since
the permafrost was rock
hard the builders did not
make supports but in it’s
loose state the buildings
could not sit on top of the
soil.
RISING SEA LEVELS
Over the years scientists studying
the ocean noticed that the water was
rising every year. The scientists
believe that the cause of the rising
sea level is global warming melting
glaciers and expanding sea water as
it becomes hotter. At the beginning
they expected it to rise 1.9 mm per
year by 2017, but the water is rising
by 3.4 mm per year. If this rate
increases it could cause severe
flooding for the next generation.
LOSS OF NATURAL WONDERS
Global warming would cause
lots of earths natural beauties
including coral reefs and
rainforests. The extreme
temperatures would also
cause flooding. Causing soil
to get teared up making that
area uninhabitable for plants
and animals.
WAYS TO
RESPOND TO
CLIMATE
CHANGE
Slowing down climate change
•Reducing our carbon foot print
•Getting a better understanding of climate change
Slowing
Adapting to climate changeAdapting
REDUCING OUR
CARBON FOOT
PRINT
To slow climate change we have to
reduce the amount of carbon dioxide
we produce (carbon footprint). To do
this we should make transportation
vehicles more eco friendly, reduce the
amount of fossil fuels we use, and
plant trees to make up for
deforestation.
UNDERSTANDING
WHY CLIMATE
CHANGE IS
HAPPENING
If we understand why our climate is
changing we can come up with ways
to stop it. We can figure out exactly
how to change and what to change so
that our world will survive for
generations to come.
ADAPTATION
We need to adapt to climate change.
We have to ready our world for rising
sea levels and strong storms. We can
do this by installing water permeable
concrete build flood defenses.
