PNS Framework objective
- Read timetables and time using 24- hour clock notation; use a calendar to calculate time intervals.

Unit learning outcome
- To understand and use a calendar.

Prior knowledge
- Understands a calendar in tabular form.
- Able to count on weeks from one month to the next.

Starter activities
- Find out and display who was born in each month – which is the commonest? Work out from this who are the
oldest members of the group. Which half of the year has more birthdays?
- Find out which is the commonest birthday day of the month.
- Find out which children have birthdays closest to each other.
- Ask children to count on how many month since their last birthday, and how many to their next.

Unit M5/5 Calendars
We use a calendar to record time in days. We use them to plan ahead, such as when we are going to do something
special. On a calendar you can count in months, weeks and days.

(a) Write down the names of each month in the correct order, be careful with spelling.

(b)Write down the number of days alongside the names of the months.
1 Look at a calendar for this year.
(a) There are …….. Sundays in January this year.
(b) There are ………Sundays in May this year.
(c) There are………Saturdays in February this year.
(d) There are………Saturdays in October this year.
2 Here are some incomplete dates, e.g. 16.05 = 16th May. Write the complete date for this year and include which
day it falls on.

3 Use a calendar to find out how many weeks there are between:
(a) 1st March and 12th April

Make two copies of the dates for the month you were born in, one copy with the days written across the top, and one copy
with the days written down the side.

A calendar is a table that show all the days and mouths in a year.
This is the calendar

There are twelve months in a year. There are January , February , March ,April
,May ,June , July , August , September , October , November and December.
It also had a list of all the days in a
mouth. You must know this that
each mouth has different number
of date. January , March , May ,
July , August , October and
December have 31 days.

April , June , September , November and
have 30 d
ays.

February is a special mouth. It has
28 or 29 days. Usually February
has 28 days but once in four year.
February has 29 days. The year in
which February has 29 days is
called a leap years.
One week has 7 day. Each letter stands for the name of each day there for in a column .
When we want to find the day of the date. We look for the day and see on which day’s
column it falls.

A Republic day

The calendar also tells us the different festival in a year. For example , A Republic day falls on 26
of January. Christmas comes on 25 December. You can also mark important days in a calendar
such as your birthday.
Writing the date
Day-Month-Year

This is an example when we write the date

16th November 2012
19th June 2012

# In English, months are correctly written with an initial capital: January, February...
# Days of the Month.

What day is it? It is Monday.
It is Sunday.

April , June , September , November and have 30 d ays. February is a special mouth. It has 28 or 29 days. Usually February has 28 days but once in four year. February has 29 days.
