3. Simple complement
• No subject on the second part
• What my boss really hates are the many teachers who arrive late.
• What upsets a lot people is littering.
• Remember to use verb to be and it depends on the complement.
• What clause in present (Is – are)
• What clause in past (Was – were)
4. Subject complement
• Full sentence on the second section (Subj + verb + Complement)
• Only use is / was
• What made everyone happy was (that) the results of the sales
were good and better than before.
• What was surprising was (that) Erica and Samuel entered the
class.
• What I’m trying to say is (that) I’m really sorry.
5. Instead of what, use it.
• Valerie decided to talk to her boss.
• It was Valerie Who decided to talk to her boss.
• Jack’s car crashed another one in the the parking lot.
• It was Jack’s car that crashed another one in the parking lot.
