Year 6 Hastings Class - Parent Communications - Autumn 1

USEFUL INFORMATION
PE: Wednesdays and Fridays
Children need: a grey tracksuit, dark coloured shorts
a white t-shirt, spare socks and trainers (no Converse
or similar please.)
HOMEWORK will be given out each Thursday and will need
to be handed in each Tuesday. !READING BOOKS: Children will be responsible for
changing their own books once they have finished. Children will
also be asked to read certain sections of their guided reading
books at home in preparation for their
next guided reading session. !P

must wear it tied back at all times for

A Child!’s War
This half term, we will be exploring the effect that the
2nd World War had on children at the time and how it
has effected our lives today. !★
RE: What is important to Christians?
★ MUSIC: Listening, composition, singing, performing
★ D&T: Food, making Anderson Shelters (We would be glad of scraps
of wood, thick card, and fabric that you no longer need.)
★ GEOGRAPHY: Towns, cities and ports in the UK that were bombed
or used for evacuation.
★ HISTORY: WW II Evacuation
★! COMPUTING: Selecting and using information / Presentations
LEARNING LOGS
In addition to weekly homework, the children will be completing a Learning
Log on a half termly basis. These logs will be your child’s record /
representation of what they have learned throughout the half term. More
information will be sent home about these soon. !P

Your child now has a login and password for the Sum Dog site. This is an educational tool that helps children to
improve their rapid recall of maths facts. The children can earn points by playing a wide range of games, and
then they are able to spend the points in the shop to buy clothes and accessories for their avatar. This site is free

Reading
Listen to your child read aloud from their school reading book for 5 minutes at least 3x a
week and sign their reading record book.
Ask your child questions about the section they have read to develop the following skills:
★ Picking out key information
★ Inference (reading between the lines)
★ Understanding the layout of a text
★ Understanding the authors choice of language / vocabulary
★ Developing reading preferences and linking reading to their own experiences /
Understanding the purpose of the text
★ Thinking about when and where the text is set / writing for different purposes.
