The subject ofScience plays animportant role indeveloping in children well-defined abilities incognitive,
affective and psychomotordomains. It augments thespirit ofenquiry, creativity, objectivityand aesthetic sensibility.
Whereas theupper primarystage demandsthat plentifulopportunities shouldbe provided to thestudents to engage
themwiththeprocesses ofscience likeobserving, recording observations, drawing, tabulation, plotting graphs etc.,
the secondarystage expects abstraction and quantitative reasoning to occupya more centralplacein the teaching
and learning of Science. Thus, the idea of atoms and molecules being the building blocks of matter makes its
appearance, as does Newton's law ofGravitation.
The present syllabus has been designed around six broad themes viz. Food, Materials, The World ofThe Living,
How Things Work, Moving Things, People and Ideas, NaturalPhenomenon and NaturalResources. Specialcare
has beentaken to avoid temptation ofadding too manyconcepts than can be comfortablylearnt in the given time
frame. No attempt has been made to be comprehensive.
At this stage, while science is stilla common subject, the disciplines ofPhysics, Chemistry and Biologybegin to
emerge. Thestudents should be exposedto experiences as wellas modes ofreasoningthat are typicalofthe subject.
General Instructions :
1. The units specified for each termshallbe assessed through bothFormative and Summative assessments.
2. In eachterm, termwillbe two formative assessments eachcarrying 10% weightage.
3. The summative assessment inthe First termwillcarry20%weightage and the summativeassessment inthe
second termwillcarry40% weightage.
4. Hands on practicalexamination willbe conducted through formative assessment in everytermwith 20%
weightage oftotaltermmarks.
5. Assessment of Practical Skills through MCQ will carry 20% weightage in every term and summative
assessment.
