Clara Campoamor was a feminist champion in Spain who successfully campaigned for women's suffrage despite opposition within her own socialist party. She fled to Switzerland in 1936 after Francisco Franco's victory in the Spanish Civil War. Clara lived in exile in Switzerland, Argentina, and Paris, publishing a book about the Spanish Revolution, and was unable to return to Spain due to her status as a Freemason, dying in exile in Switzerland in 1972.
