• Claims assert something. Claims are not questions.
• From your text: "A claim is a statement the advocate
believes or is in the process of evaluating..."
4. Objectives
• We’re going to learn more about another type of
claim,
• It allow the readers to decide what should not be
valued.
• It is beyond facts and beyond policies,
• But it appeals to your emotions and justification.
5. What is Claim of Value?
• A Claim of Value asserts qualitative judgments along
a good-to-bad continuum relating to persons, events,
and things in one’s environment.
• If you construct a position claiming that something is
good or bad or one thing is better than another,
you’ve made a claim of value.
6. Defending a Claim of Value
1. Make clear that the values or principles you are defending should
have priority on a scale of values over completing values or principles
others might defend.
2. Suggest that adherence to the values you are defending will bring
about good results.
3. Since values are abstract, you should use real-world examples and
illustrations to clarify meaning and make distinctions.
4. Use the testimony of other to prove that knowledgeable or highly
regarded people share your values.
7. Other principles
• Make a judgment express disapproval and/or approval
attempt to prove that some action, belief, or condition
is right or wrong, good or bad, etc.
• can be a simple expression of taste, preferences, and
prejudices.
• can be defended or attached on the basis of
standards. YOU have to arrive at reasonable standards
that reasonable readers will accept.
8. Claim of value example.
• Van Gogh's paintings were beautiful
• Abortion is morally wrong.
• Thomas Paine's "Liberty is more precious than life"
• Getting rid of open campus at U-High is impractical
