• Collage- a form of art in which various
materials such as photographs and
pieces of paper or fabric are arranged
and stuck to a backing.
• Community- a group of people living
together in one place.
• Traditions- the passing down of
customs or beliefs from generation to
generation.

• Families in their community can be

Indicator Activity- “Family
Collage”
• Introduce the activity by asking
the students to give examples of
how families in their community
are similar and different, but apart
of the community
• Read story “All Kinds of Families,”
by Norma Simon
Indicator Activity- “Family
Collage”
• Discuss with the students what a
family is.
• While discussing, record answers
on chart paper.

• Inform students they are going to make
a “family collage.” Students should
have already brought pictures from
home of their family.
• Provide students with materials:
– Construction paper
– Magazines
– Scissors
– Markers
– Glue

• Direct the students to create
collages that represent their
families and things they do with
their families.
• Explain they can draw pictures,
glue on photos from home, or glue
on magazine pictures.

• After the collages are made, the
students can share and describe them
with the whole class.
• Have them listen to see how families
are similar and different.
• Be sure to hang the students collages
on a bulletin board!
