The Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019, which takes effect on January 10, 2020, grants citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian refugees from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh who fled due to religious persecution. The act reduces the period for naturalization from 12 years to 6 years for these minority communities and allows individuals who entered India by December 31, 2014, to apply for citizenship regardless of their documentation status. Additionally, pending illegal migration proceedings will be terminated upon the granting of citizenship to eligible individuals.
