Cirrus : High-Level
Thinking
Cirrus …
• Was built at UQ by AustLit, with the support of TIG and TEL grants.
• Launched in 2016 with a view to two kinds of assessment:
annotations and long-form digital writing.
• Now offers four kinds of annotation (text, image, audio, and video)
and two forms of digital writing (multi-tabbed and parallax
webpages).
• Was built collaboratively with the UQ students and staff who used
it.
• Has been used by over 4000 UQ students since 2016, in courses of
between 10 and 400 students.
Annotation
Text, Image, Video, Audio
Students can:
- Directly interrogate the object under
analysis.
- Analyse a richer range of content.
- Prep for tutorials online.
Staff can:
- See student engagement with tutorial
preparation and reading.
- Easily monitor improvement over the
semester.
All annotation options
• Are available as both staff-uploaded or student-uploaded tasks: set
work for students to annotate or have students upload their own
work.
• Can be set to either individual or group annotations: facilitate
group discussions of work or peer-to-peer feedback.
• Are available through the Cirrus website or as an LTI plug-in
through Blackboard: set Cirrus assignments from the Assessment
section of Blackboard.
• Can be downloaded as PDFs and submitted through Turnitin.
Multi-tabbed Webpages
Students can quickly and easily build multi-
tabbed webpages, using a custom system:
- Add text and images
- Embed interactive content, including
audio and video (e.g., via Vimeo), 3D
objects (e.g., via Sketchfab), interactive
timelines (e.g., via Knight Lab)
- Build up a rich analysis of the object
under interrogation
- Even directly annotate the object of
study within their assignment
Parallax Webpages
Students use an intuitive branching system
to build rich, beautiful webpages.
- Make the most of illustrated material
- Produce a beautiful outcome that can
form part of their eportfolios
- Showcase creative work
- Branch out from the traditional essay
into alternative forms of writing
- Includes all the embedding and
annotation functions of the multi-
tabbed webpage
Both the multi-tabbed webpage and parallax webpage can be
downloaded as PDFs for submission through Blackboard and
Turnitin.
