Cirrus is a digital annotation and writing platform developed at the University of Queensland to support student learning. It offers four types of annotation for texts, images, audio, and video, as well as options for digital writing in multi-tabbed webpages or parallax webpages. Cirrus has been used by over 4,000 UQ students since 2016 across various course sizes. It allows students to directly engage with course materials and analyze a variety of content, while also giving instructors insights into student work. All annotation and writing tasks can be set up individually or collaboratively to support group work.

Using Open Educational Resources (OER) provides opportunities for collaboration both in the classroom and beyond. Many universities have embraced video conferencing tools such as Skype and Google Hangouts for common learning activities with students in classrooms across the street, across the country, or across the globe. This paper describes an ongoing collaboration between two universities, one in the United States and the other in Romania, where students use synchronous and asynchronous communication tools to complete a combined work product during the course of a semester. The project requires students to create, curate and publish digital media using established and emerging open educational and social media tools such as VoiceThread, ThingLink, SoundCloud, and YouTube. Each year, students work in groups with their international partners to create digital media artifacts that share their findings related to a current technology trend. Students chronicle their work, share resources, and collaborate using the ViCaDiS (Virtual Campus for Digital Students) platform and select the means of digital communication that they deem most appropriate for the various tasks involved. In the process, they also experience global cultures while communicating with international partners, and develop critical thinking and problem solving skills while using the Web as a research tool. This paper presents an analysis of student and faculty experiences over a five-year period using a variety of open educational tools as resources for creating an international Connectivist, learning environment. The analysis is based on authors’ records, initial and final surveys of student experiences each year, and their feedback. The paper concludes with recommendations on using these tools as OER in an international collaborative learning environment using Connectivist principles, thus creating a Connectivist OER (xOER).

Students chronicle their work, share resources, and collaborate using the ViCaDiS (Virtual Campus for Digital Students) platform and select the means of digital communication that they deem most appropriate for the various tasks involved. In the process, they also experience global cultures while communicating with international partners, and develop critical thinking and problem solving skills while using the Web as a research tool. This paper presents an analysis of student and faculty experiences over a five-year period using a variety of open educational tools as resources for creating an international Connectivist, learning environment. The analysis is based on authors’ records, initial and final surveys of student experiences each year, and their feedback. The paper concludes with recommendations on using these tools as OER in an international collaborative learning environment using Connectivist principles, thus creating a Connectivist OER (xOER).

Reading an AustLit Record
This document provides guidance on how to interpret records for authors and organizations ("agents") on the AustLit database. It outlines the various sections found on an agent record, including the header with biographical information, a biography, works by and about the agent, any awards won, works taught in educational institutions, and links to related resources on AustLit and Trove. It explains how to use the left-hand tabs to filter results and find specific works, and the right-hand tabs to follow agents, explore related exhibitions, export record information, and find other mentions of the agent. The goal is to help users navigate agent records and extract relevant details and relationships.

Cirrus … • Was built at UQ by AustLit, with the support of TIG and TEL grants. • Launched in 2016 with a view to two kinds of assessment: annotations and long-form digital writing. • Now offers four kinds of annotation (text, image, audio, and video) and two forms of digital writing (multi-tabbed and parallax webpages). • Was built collaboratively with the UQ students and staff who used it. • Has been used by over 4000 UQ students since 2016, in courses of between 10 and 400 students.

- 4. Students can: - Directly interrogate the object under analysis. - Analyse a richer range of content. - Prep for tutorials online. Staff can: - See student engagement with tutorial preparation and reading. - Easily monitor improvement over the semester.

All annotation options • Are available as both staff-uploaded or student-uploaded tasks: set work for students to annotate or have students upload their own work. • Can be set to either individual or group annotations: facilitate group discussions of work or peer-to-peer feedback. • Are available through the Cirrus website or as an LTI plug-in through Blackboard: set Cirrus assignments from the Assessment section of Blackboard. • Can be downloaded as PDFs and submitted through Turnitin.

Students can quickly and easily build multi- tabbed webpages, using a custom system: - Add text and images - Embed interactive content, including audio and video (e.g., via Vimeo), 3D objects (e.g., via Sketchfab), interactive timelines (e.g., via Knight Lab) - Build up a rich analysis of the object under interrogation - Even directly annotate the object of study within their assignment

Students use an intuitive branching system to build rich, beautiful webpages. - Make the most of illustrated material - Produce a beautiful outcome that can form part of their eportfolios - Showcase creative work - Branch out from the traditional essay into alternative forms of writing - Includes all the embedding and annotation functions of the multi- tabbed webpage
