Semantic Technologies for Vehicle Data - Defense Benjamin Klotz
Vehicles are evolving from purely mechanical entities to highly connected and autonomous ones.
While accessing this new rich data leads to new business and technical opportunities, making vehicle fleets interoperable is still highly challenging with competing standards, numerous vehicle signals and attributes, heterogeneous formats and vehicle architectures. In order to ensure replicability and interoperability we propose to use Semantic Web technologies in this thesis.
In this thesis, we propose VSSo, a vehicle signal and attribute ontology that builds on the automotive standard VSS, and that follows the SSN/SOSA design pattern. VSSo is comprehensive while being extensible for OEMs, so that they can use additional private signals in an interoperable way.
We describe a more general driving context ontology supporting the description of events and states of the various agents of driving situations: drivers, passengers, vehicles, roads, trajectories. We develop tools and demonstrators to highlight the benefit of the driving context ontology in predicting and contextualizing aggressive driving, and recommending POIs and safer routes.
Finally, we contribute to the Web of Things specification by aligning our ontologies with it. We provide automotive-specific requirements and implementations, and highlight the benefit of the Web of Things for automotive application developers.
VSSo: the Vehicle Signal and Attribute OntologyBenjamin Klotz
Application developers in the automotive domain have to
deal with thousands of dierent signals, represented in highly heterogeneous
formats, and coming from various car architectures. This situation
prevents the development and connectivity of modern applications.
We hypothesize that a formal model of car signals, in which the
denition of signals are uncorrelated with the physical implementations
producing them, would improve interoperability. In this paper, we propose

Smart ports: towards a high performance, increased productivity, and a bette...IJECEIAES
Ports are currently competing fiercely for capital and global investments in order to improve revenues, mostly by improving performance and lowering labor costs. Smart ports are a fantastic approach to realize these elements since they integrate information and communication technologies within smart applications, ultimately contributing to port management improvement. This leads to greater performance and lower operational expenses. As a result, several ports in Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America have gone smart. However, there are a lot of critical factors to consider when automating port operations, such as greenhouse gas emissions, which have reached alarming proportions. The purpose of this study is to define the most essential tasks conducted by smart ports, such as the smart ship industry, smart gantry and quayside container cranes, transport automation, smart containers, and energy efficiency. Furthermore, it gives a model of the smart port concept and highlights the critical current technologies on which the ports are based. Each technology’s most significant contributions to its development are noted. This technology is compared to more traditional technologies. It is hoped that this effort would pique the curiosity of fresh researchers in this sector.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Asian
Show
case
will
begin
in
the
Port
of
Shenzhen,
the
fourth
largest
container
port
in
the
world
processing
over
22M
TEU
containers
annually.
Remarkably,
the
third
largest
container
port
is
Hong
Kong,
the
second
largest
is
Singapore,
and
first
is
Shanghai.
The
number
of
containers
and
the
equipment
that
utilize
the
ports
in
the
region
is
incredible
to
say
the
least.
In
the
second
half
of
2014
CIMC
Intelligent
Technology
Company
will
have
a
platform
to
illustrate
to
all
industry
participants
an

any
intermodal
asset
anywhere
in
the

Globally
speaking,
thirty
two
million
containers
pass
through
four
thousand
ports
on
seven
continents
transporting
more
than
ninety
percent
of
the
world’s
products.
This
“system
of
systems”
utilizes
rail,
ship,
and
truck,
equipment
and
is
one
of
the
most
complicated
and
widespread
networks
in
our
modern
world.
Fundamental
to
the
success
of
this
industry
is
the
accurate
and
timely
sharing
of
logistical
data,
which
allows
for
the
safe
and
secure
transfer
of
containerized
cargo.
The
CIMC
Globe

showcase
is
designed
to
maximize
both
the
quantity
and
quality
of
real
time
information
utilizing
Sub
GHz
RF,
Wi
Fi,
GSM
cellular,
GPS,
embedded
software,
sensor
and
internet
technologies.
It
is
important
to
state
that
the
Asian
technology
showcase
certainly
may
continue
far
into
the
future
as
intermodal
stakeholders
adopt
the
technology
and
each
company
respectfully
continues
to
benefit
from
the
endeavor.
