Ciara Turner led a fundraising effort through her workplace and university that raised over $5,800 for childhood cancer research and support. She implemented an idea to have her professional organization and university soccer team join forces for a fundraising event. Through coordinated efforts and buy-in across groups, the event was very successful. As a cancer survivor, the CEO of the benefiting organization, Vs. Cancer Foundation, expresses how impactful these funds will be for research and support, and that the funds would not have been raised without Ciara's dedication in turning her idea into a reality.
Embrace altruistic values and practice loving kindness with self and others is one of the 10 Caritas Principles developed by Jean Watson. To embrace this concept, on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2013, members of the Kaiser Vallejo Caritas Circle made rounds throughout the entire hospital, inspiring people to practice kindness and pass it on to others, by passing out heart stickers and a “Heart It Forward” card containing more stickers to pass on to others remembering, kindness doesn’t cost a thing but it makes all the difference in our world.
The caring committee concentrated on the 10 caritas processes. We selected one process every month and the committee members interviewed their co-workers as to what that word means to them and collected their stories/interpretation.
Monthly Caritas Tea-Team Time is a monthly event started by the PACU unit of Kaiser Vallejo Medical Center. Tea is served as individuals express Caritas moments and experiences, promoting helping-trusting relationships among the staff and serving as a centering moment to pause before a patient interaction.

Crowdfunding for medical care—seeking financial contributions from a large number of donors, often via social networks, to pay medical expenses—is growing in popularity in both the US and Canada. While the practice can have tangible benefits for some patients, it also raises challenging ethical and equity questions at the social level and for individual donors and campaigners. In this lecture, Professor Valorie Crooks examined some of these questions, identified important directions for ethics-focused research, and discussed what we know about the medical expenses people are seeking to have covered.

Please Support The Chase After a Cure for Childhood CancerGoing Places, Inc
Chase After a Cure (CAAC) was started in 2009 by Summerville, S.C., resident Whitney Ringler and her family after her son, Chase, was given a 30 percent chance of survival after being diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma, a cancer of the nerve tissue of the sympathetic nervous system. Chase survived this aggressive form of cancer and now his family works tirelessly on behalf of childhood cancer research.
CAAC raises awareness about childhood cancer, specifically neuroblastoma, and funds childhood cancer research at the Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital.
Cancer is the No. 1 cause of disease-related death among children. About 13,500 children between birth and age 19 are diagnosed with cancer each year. Just at the Medical University of South Carolina, about 70 children are diagnosed with pediatric cancer annually.
Compared to adult cancer, childhood cancers are rare. Even though childhood cancer incidence rates continue to increase slightly each year, they still represent less than 1 percent of all new cancer diagnoses. That means funding for childhood cancer research is limited. In particular, neuroblastoma – which has one of the lowest survival rates – receives very little attention because the population base with this form of cancer isn’t profitable enough for pharmaceutical companies to develop new treatments.
While childhood cancer may impact a smaller population, it impacts the young lives of those diagnosed at 100 percent. Please help support Chase After a Cure. www.chaseafteracure.com/donate

To Whom It May Concern-
In my time working within the childhood cancer world, I have had the opportunity to meet a vast number of
supporters and proponents to our mission of empowering athletes and communities to fund lifesaving childhood cancer
efforts. I can say, undoubtedly, nobody has supported and served our mission and our kids like Ciara Turner.
By leading the Precise Professionals and the SIUE community in a newfound effort to join the soccer team with
the idea of helping children with cancer, over $5,800 was raised benefiting Vs. Cancer, national childhood cancer
research, and directly helping the local community with the ‘Friends of Kids with Cancer Foundation.’
Ciara took an idea and turned it into an actual feasible event that was wildly successful, by implementing both
her surrounding peers in a coordinated effort but also crossing into the SIUE athletic department to ensure a complete
buy in by all parties. The result was significant, by raising thousands of dollars from scratch.
As a cancer survivor, personally, I can attest to the impact that these funds will have, and also to the dedication
that is needed in order to turn a concept into fruition. I’m here solely because of that capability dedication, and all the
more thankful because of it.
Needless to say, those funds- which will be distributed to both childhood cancer research and to kids directly in
the local community- would not have been raised without Ciara and the rest of the group. In terms of impacting the lives
of others, I could not give a higher recommendation.
