Welcome
 Description: This WebQuest is designed for students to understand

their sense of smell and connect it to their lives.
 Grade level: 1-3
 Curriculum: Science
 Key Words: smell
 Author: Marci Poe
Introduction
In this WebQuest we are going to learn about smell. Our nose is used to
smell things that surround us. Smells are everywhere whether we notice
them or not.
I will read New York, Phew York by Amber Jones to the class. The
students connect smell to their lives just as the kid in New York, Phew
York did.
Task
 Teacher Read Aloud: New York, Phew York by Amber Jones
 Students will:

- look up and define the term smell
-look up synonyms for the term smell
- look up how to write a paragraph (for review)
-write a paragraph connecting their life to every day smells
-paint a picture of themselves smelling something
-use modeling clay to create an object that smells to them
 The smells can be good, bad, or both.
Process
1. First, after New York, Phew York is read, you will grab your notebook
and look up the definition of the sense of smell and synonyms for smell
from the links provided. http://thesaurus.com/browse/smell
http://www.kidcyber.com.au/topics/body_senses.htm
2. Next, you should look at the link I provided for review on how to write a
paragraph. http://www.cape.k12.mo.us/blanchard/hicks/Teacher
%20Pages/PowerPoints/Writing%20a%20Five%20Sentence
%20Paragraph_files/frame.htm
3. Then, you will write a paragraph about a real life adventure in your life
and the all the smells around you that you smelled during your
adventure. I would like you to try to use synonyms for smell in your
paragraph, if possible. Your smells can be good, bad, or both.
Process Continued
 4. After the first three steps, you are going to go to the center set up for

painting. You are to paint a picture of yourself smelling something. (i.e.
flowers, candle, food) Your smells can be good, bad, or both.
 5. Finally, you will go to the center I have set up with modeling clay.
There you will make an object out of the modeling clay. The object
needs to smell a smell that you remember. (flowers, bacon, perfume,
etc.)
