The document outlines a group project for 4th grade students where they will be assigned to groups and research a holiday that no one in their group celebrates. Each group will create a poster and 7-10 minute presentation about the holiday's history, origins, traditions, and other key details. The teacher explains how they utilized the ASSURE instructional design model to plan the project, including analyzing learners, stating objectives, methods and materials, requiring participation, and evaluating student work. The goal is for students to learn about different cultural holidays through research, collaboration, and presentations.

Learning New Holidays Project
Holidays highlight some of the best days of the year. You either get to eat a lot, get some
new toys to play with, set off some fireworks, and best of all we don’t have to go to work
or school on some those days. Have you ever wondered though if there are certain
holidays that maybe you don’t celebrate? Well the answer is yes. There are several
holidays out there that only certain people celebrate whether it is where they live or what
religion they practice. You will be assigned into 5 groups of 4 and will be required to
pick a holiday that no one in your group celebrates. Your group will do research on that
holiday and will be required to do a 7-10 minute presentation on the holiday that your
group has chosen.
Objectives:
1. To better your understanding of different holidays and people that celebrate them.
2. To develop teamwork as you will be working in groups.
3. To develop your public speaking skills as you will all be required to speak in front of
the class.
Required Materials/Media
1. Tri-Fold Poster Board (To present your research). (You can get these for cheap at a
store like Wal-Mart). If you have any problems getting on of these then let me know.
2. Internet Access (If you don’t have internet at home, you can use the computers in the
school library, I have also reserved some days for the class in the library so that you can
get your research done).
I will also be providing glue and markers work on your poster boards with in class which
I will provide a few days in class for your groups to work on your poster boards, and
even a day to practice your presentations.
Project must include:
1. A holiday that no one in your group celebrates.
2. Basic history of the holiday (Why and when did people start celebrating it)?
3. What country/groups of people celebrate the holiday?
4. Any traditions on the holiday? (Activities, certain food associated with the holiday)?
This is like how we set of fireworks for the 4th of July and eat turkey and ham for
Thanksgiving.
5. A presentation in which all 4 members of the group speak, and is 7-10 minutes.
6. List of the websites you got your research from.
There will also be time for some students to ask questions or give feedback after each
presentation.
Due Date: To Be Announced
2. How the ASSURE Method was used:
A: Analyze Learners: My learners for this class include some people of different gender,
race, and religion, so I required this to be a group project so that these different types of
people could work together. I also knew that since these people are in 4th grade they
should the basics of the holidays they celebrate, and that is why I required that they chose
a holiday that they do not celebrate. Also since they are in 4th grade I only required they
list the website they got the material from instead of having them do a works cited page
which they haven’t learned yet. Also with a presentation on a tri-fold poster board
students not only get to hear the presentation, but they also get to see it on the poster
board, and the students also have to do research and write about the holiday they chose.
This means that the students will be learning through hearing, seeing, and writing.
S: State Objectives: As far as audience goes, I have students engaging in teamwork, as
well as students watching presentations so that they can learn from their fellow
classmates which may be more interesting to them than learning from the teacher. I
define the behavior or what they should learn in the objectives section of the project. I
include words like develop, and better of understanding. I stated the conditions in the first
paragraph where I said that students will be divided into groups and will give a
presentation with a tri-fold poster board. I stated the degree in the project must include
section, and gave the students clear instructions on what their project and presentation
must have to receive a good grade.
S: State Methods Media and Materials: I stated the method by saying that the groups will
be presenting the project on a tri-fold poster board to the class. The media includes the
tri-fold poster board used to actual present the project, and the internet access. The
materials needed are glue, pencils, and markers which I provide in class.
U: Utilize Methods Media and Materials: I utilized the method simply by insuring that all
students are able to get into groups and have a tri-fold poster board which are both
required for the project. I utilized the media which is the poster board and internet access
by insuring everyone has a poster board, and reserving time in the library for people to
get on the computer and do their research. I utilized the materials which are markers,
glue, and pencils by providing them in class.
R: Require Learner Participation: As stated before, students will not only have to do
research, write, and speak about the holiday they chose, but they will also have to listen
to the other groups presentations as well. They will even get a visual aid from the tri-fold
poster board. This covers many of the different learning styles. Students also get to ask
questions and give feedback after each presentation as stated above.
E: Evaluate and Revise: As shown in the projects must include section, I have clearly
stated what I expect from each group to be included in their projects which will overall
determine their final evaluation. To revise I will look back at each project and
presentation and see if they followed what they were told, maybe I required them to
research too many things, or maybe I required them to research too little things that they
couldn’t imagine making a 7-10 minute presentation out of it. Maybe some of the
3. students didn’t speak as much as they should have. These are things that I will have to
observe and take note of as a teacher, and hopefully I will be able to resolve any issue
that occurs with student evaluation.
