Student Success: Overview and Key Findings
A 2013 Naonal Survey of Business and Non Profit Leaders
See 2015 Employer Survey Data
Especially since the recent economic downturn and in light of
the increasingly compeve global economy, employers
express concerns about
whether the U.S. is producing enough college graduates and
whether they have the skills, knowledge, and personal
responsibility to contribute to a
changing workplace and help companies and organizaons
succeed and grow. This report provides a detailed analysis of
employers’ priories for
the kinds of learning today’s college students need to succeed in
this innovaon-fueled economy. It also reports on changes in
educaonal and
assessment pracces that employers recommend.
This report is part of a series on surveys and focus groups that
the Associaon of American Colleges and Universies
(AAC&U) has commissioned
since 2005, when it began its naonal iniave, Liberal
Educaon and America’s Promise (LEAP). These employer and
civic leader studies have
informed the work of hundreds of colleges and universies and
state systems as they seek to develop strong curricula and
educaonal pracces
that will beer prepare today’s students for success as workers
and cizens in the 21 century.
Innovaon a Priority
Nearly all employers surveyed (95 percent) say they give hiring
preference to college graduates with skills that will enable them
to contribute
to innovaon in the workplace.
92 percent agree that “innovaon is essenal” to their
organizaon’s connued success.
Cross-Cung Capacies vs. Choice of Undergraduate Major
Nearly all those surveyed (93 percent) say that “a demonstrated
capacity to think crically, communicate clearly, and solve
complex
problems is more important than [a candidate’s] undergraduate
major.”
More than 9 in 10 of those surveyed say it is important that
those they hire demonstrate ethical judgment and integrity;
intercultural skills;
and the capacity for connued new learning.
More than 75% of employers say they want more emphasis on 5
key areas including: crical thinking, complex problem-
solving, wrien and
oral communicaon, and applied knowledge in real-world
sengs.
Employers endorse several educaonal pracces as potenally
helpful in preparing college students for workplace success.
These include
pracces that require students to a) conduct research and use
evidence-based analysis; b) gain in-depth knowledge in the
major and
analyc, problem solving and communicaon skills; and c)
apply their learning in real-world sengs.
Connued Importance of Liberal Educaon and the Liberal
Arts
The majority of employers agree that having both field-specific
knowledge and skills and a broad range of skills and knowledge
is most
important for recent college graduates to achieve long-term
career success. Few think that having field-specific knowledge
and skills alone is
what is most needed for individuals’ career success.
80 percent of employers agree that, regardless of their major, all
college students should acquire broad knowledge in the liberal
arts and
sciences.
When read a descripon of a 21 -century liberal educaon*, a
large majority of employers recognize its importance; 74
percent would
recommend this kind of educaon to a young person they know
as the best way to prepare for success in today’s global
economy.
Assessment of Preparaon for Entry-Level Posions and for
Advancement
A majority of employers (56 percent) express sasfacon with
the job colleges and universies are doing to prepare graduates
for success in
the workplace, but more than two in five indicate room for
improvement.
Two in three employers believe most college graduates have the
skills and knowledge they need to succeed in entry-level
posions, but only
44 percent believe they have what is required for advancement
and promoon to higher levels.

Across many areas tested, employers strongly endorse
educaonal pracces that involve students in acve, efforul
work—pracces
including collaborave problem-solving, internships, senior
projects, and community engagements. Employers consistently
rank outcomes
and pracces that involve applicaon of skills over acquision
of discrete bodies of knowledge. Employers also strongly
endorse pracces
that require students to demonstrate both acquision of
knowledge and its applicaon.
E-porolios and Partnerships to Ensure College Graduates’
Successful Transion to the Workplace
In addion to a resume or college transcript, more than 4 in 5
employers say an electronic porolio would be useful to them
in ensuring that
job applicants have the knowledge and skills they need to
succeed in their company or organizaon.
Business and non-profit leaders are highly interested in
partnering with colleges and universies to provide more
hands-on learning
opportunies and to help college students successfully make the
transion from college into the workplace.
*Definion of liberal educaon provided in this survey: “This
approach to a college educaon provides both broad knowledge
in a variety of areas of
study and knowledge in a specific major or field of interest. It
also helps students develop a sense of social responsibility, as
well as intellectual and
praccal skills that span all areas of study, such as
communicaon, analycal, and problem-solving skills, and a
demonstrated ability to apply
knowledge and skills in real-world sengs.
Methodology
From January 9 to 13, 2013, Hart Research Associates
conducted an online survey among 318 employers whose
organizaons have at least 25
employees and report that 25% or more of their new hires hold
either an associate degree from a two-year college or a
bachelor’s degree from a
four-year college. Respondents are execuves at private sector
and nonprofit organizaons, including owners, CEOs,
presidents, C-suite level
execuves, and vice presidents.

9/7/2018 Why Reading Is The Most Important Key To Success,
As Told By 3 Successful People
https://www.elitedaily.com/life/culture/influential-people-
importance-reading/794975 2/5
In my study of successful people, the one thing they all seem to
have in common is a passion
and dedication for reading. Below are three firsthand accounts
from highly influential people
highlighting the importance of reading.
1 . W A R R E N B U F F E T T A N D C H A R L I E M U
N G E R
I group these two together because of the extent to which they
share the same
ideologies. The duo is legendary for their longstanding business
and investing prowess
through investments at Berkshire Hathaway, which has
consistently outperformed the market
since its inception.
The result has spawned an army of devoted followers and has
earned Buett and Munger
titles of two of the richest men on the planet. As a testament to
their influence, thousands of
people fly in from across the world to spend just a day listening
to Buett and Munger speak
at their annual shareholder’s meeting.
So when Buett or Munger give advice, we should listen. The
two largely share the same
philosophies on best business practices and investment styles,
and they also happen to
agree on the same method for success. In a 2007
commencement speech given at the USC
School of Law, Charlie Munger said:
I constantly see people rise in life who are not the smartest,
sometimes not even the most
diligent, but they are learning machines. They go to bed every
night a little wiser than they
were when they got up and boy does that help, particularly when
you have a long run
ahead of you.
He goes on to reference Buett as an example of such a
learning machine:

If you watched Warren Buett with a time clock, I would say
half of all the time he spends
is just sitting on his ass and reading. And a big chunk of the rest
of the time is spent
talking on the phone or personally with people he trusts.
Buett echoes his partner’s sentiments. When asked how to get
smarter at a conference, he
held up a stack of papers and said:
Read 500 pages like this every day. That’s how knowledge
works. It builds up, like
compound interest. All of you can do it, but I guarantee not
many of you will.
2 . M A R K C U B A N
Mark Cuban seems to achieve success in every industry he
enters, whether it’s business,
entertainment, technology, investing or sports. He started and
sold his first business, Micro
Solution
s (a systems integrator and software reseller), despite never
having formally studied
technology or software. How did he do it?
The reason, according to Cuban, is that reading gave him the
competitive advantage to
succeed where others couldn’t, and this applies to all endeavors.
As he explains in his book,
"How to Win at the Sport of Business,"
I read every book and magazine I could. Heck, three bucks for a
magazine, twenty bucks
for a book. One good idea would lead to a customer or a
solution, and those magazines
and books paid for themselves many times over. Some of the
ideas I read were good,
some not. In doing all the reading I learned a valuable lesson.
Most people won’t put in
the time to get a knowledge advantage. Sure, there were folks
that worked hard at picking
up every bit of information that they could, but we were few
and far between. To this day, I

feel like if I put in enough time consuming all the information
available, particularly with
the Internet making it so readily accessible, I can get an
advantage in any technology
business
3 . M A L C O L M X
Perhaps the most inspirational example of the importance of
reading comes from the life story
of Malcolm X. He dropped out of school upon completing the
8th grade, disgusted with the
educational system after a white teacher at the school had
discouraged him in his dream of
becoming a lawyer.
Out of school, Malcolm X eventually entered into the world of
drug dealing and pimping in
Harlem at age 18, then got into larger robberies and was
arrested and incarcerated for
larceny at age 20.
However, Malcolm X began to turn his life around during his
time in prison, partly through his
conversion to Islam, but more so through a fellow inmate who
inspired in him a serious
passion for reading. He writes in his autobiography:
In every free moment I had, if I was not reading in the library, I
was reading on my bunk.
You couldn’t have gotten me out of books with a wedge [...] In
fact, up until then, I had
never been so truly free in my life [...] My homemade education
gave me, with every
additional book that I read, a little bit more sensitivity to the
deafness, dumbness and
blindness that was aicting the black race in America. Not long
ago, an English writer
telephoned my from London, asking questions. One was,
‘What’s your alma mater?’ I told
him, ‘Books.’ You will never catch me with a free fifteen
minutes in which I’m not studying
something...

These three people worked or continue to work in a range of
fields spanning business,
investing, technology, politics, public speaking, civil rights and
leadership.
They lived or live through dierent periods of time with
dierent purposes and missions in
life. Yet the common link among them is their anity for
reading and their accreditation of
success to that key trait.
The takeaway is, regardless of your endeavor, your current
situation, your upbringing, or the
path you wish to take in life, reading is the key to upward
mobility. It may not guarantee
success, but it surely increases the chances of it.
Fortunately, the amount of time we spend reading is entirely
within our control, so get to it.

This report provides a detailed analysis of employers’ priories for the kinds of learning today’s college students need to succeed in this innovaon-fueled economy. It also reports on changes in educaonal and assessment pracces that employers recommend. This report is part of a series on surveys and focus groups that the Associaon of American Colleges and Universies (AAC&U) has commissioned since 2005, when it began its naonal iniave, Liberal
  • 8. Educaon and America’s Promise (LEAP). These employer and civic leader studies have informed the work of hundreds of colleges and universies and state systems as they seek to develop strong curricula and educaonal pracces that will beer prepare today’s students for success as workers and cizens in the 21 century. Innovaon a Priority Nearly all employers surveyed (95 percent) say they give hiring preference to college graduates with skills that will enable them to contribute to innovaon in the workplace. 92 percent agree that “innovaon is essenal” to their organizaon’s connued success. Cross-Cung Capacies vs. Choice of Undergraduate Major Nearly all those surveyed (93 percent) say that “a demonstrated capacity to think crically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems is more important than [a candidate’s] undergraduate major.” More than 9 in 10 of those surveyed say it is important that those they hire demonstrate ethical judgment and integrity; intercultural skills; and the capacity for connued new learning. More than 75% of employers say they want more emphasis on 5 key areas including: crical thinking, complex problem- solving, wrien and oral communicaon, and applied knowledge in real-world sengs.
  • 9. Employers endorse several educaonal pracces as potenally helpful in preparing college students for workplace success. These include pracces that require students to a) conduct research and use evidence-based analysis; b) gain in-depth knowledge in the major and analyc, problem solving and communicaon skills; and c) apply their learning in real-world sengs. Connued Importance of Liberal Educaon and the Liberal Arts The majority of employers agree that having both field-specific knowledge and skills and a broad range of skills and knowledge is most important for recent college graduates to achieve long-term career success. Few think that having field-specific knowledge and skills alone is what is most needed for individuals’ career success. 80 percent of employers agree that, regardless of their major, all college students should acquire broad knowledge in the liberal arts and sciences. When read a descripon of a 21 -century liberal educaon*, a large majority of employers recognize its importance; 74 percent would recommend this kind of educaon to a young person they know as the best way to prepare for success in today’s global economy. Assessment of Preparaon for Entry-Level Posions and for Advancement
  • 10. A majority of employers (56 percent) express sasfacon with the job colleges and universies are doing to prepare graduates for success in the workplace, but more than two in five indicate room for improvement. Two in three employers believe most college graduates have the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in entry-level posions, but only 44 percent believe they have what is required for advancement and promoon to higher levels. Employers consistently rank outcomes and pracces that involve applicaon of skills over acquision of discrete bodies of knowledge. Employers also strongly endorse pracces that require students to demonstrate both acquision of knowledge and its applicaon. Below are three firsthand accounts from highly influential people highlighting the importance of reading. 1 . The duo is legendary for their longstanding business and investing prowess

The result has spawned an army of devoted followers and has earned Buett and Munger titles of two of the richest men on the planet. As a testament to their influence, thousands of people fly in from across the world to spend just a day listening to Buett and Munger speak at their annual shareholder’s meeting. So when Buett or Munger give advice, we should listen. The two largely share the same philosophies on best business practices and investment styles, and they also happen to agree on the same method for success. In a 2007 commencement speech given at the USC School of Law, Charlie Munger said: I constantly see people rise in life who are not the smartest, sometimes not even the most diligent, but they are learning machines. They go to bed every night a little wiser than they were when they got up and boy does that help, particularly when you have a long run

He goes on to reference Buett as an example of such a learning machine: https://medium.com/@TheGaryWu/how-to-stand-out-from-the- crowd-b1dfceb76914 https://www.elitedaily.com/ https://www.elitedaily.com/ https://www.elitedaily.com/ https://www.elitedaily.com/ https://www.elitedaily.com/ 9/7/2018 Why Reading Is The Most Important Key To Success, As Told By 3 Successful People https://www.elitedaily.com/life/culture/influential-people- importance-reading/794975 3/5 If you watched Warren Buett with a time clock, I would say half of all the time he spends is just sitting on his ass and reading. And a big chunk of the rest of the time is spent talking on the phone or personally with people he trusts. Buett echoes his partner’s sentiments. When asked how to get smarter at a conference, he held up a stack of papers and said: Read 500 pages like this every day. That’s how knowledge works. It builds up, like

M A R K C U B A N Mark Cuban seems to achieve success in every industry he enters, whether it’s business, entertainment, technology, investing or sports. He started and sold his first business, Micro Solution s (a systems integrator and software reseller), despite never having formally studied technology or software. How did he do it? The reason, according to Cuban, is that reading gave him the competitive advantage to succeed where others couldn’t, and this applies to all endeavors. As he explains in his book, "How to Win at the Sport of Business,"
  • 20. I read every book and magazine I could. Heck, three bucks for a magazine, twenty bucks for a book. One good idea would lead to a customer or a solution, and those magazines and books paid for themselves many times over. Some of the ideas I read were good, some not. In doing all the reading I learned a valuable lesson. Most people won’t put in the time to get a knowledge advantage. Sure, there were folks that worked hard at picking up every bit of information that they could, but we were few and far between. To this day, I https://www.elitedaily.com/ https://www.elitedaily.com/ https://www.elitedaily.com/ https://www.elitedaily.com/ https://www.elitedaily.com/

M A L C O L M X Perhaps the most inspirational example of the importance of reading comes from the life story of Malcolm X. He dropped out of school upon completing the 8th grade, disgusted with the educational system after a white teacher at the school had discouraged him in his dream of

Out of school, Malcolm X eventually entered into the world of drug dealing and pimping in Harlem at age 18, then got into larger robberies and was arrested and incarcerated for larceny at age 20. However, Malcolm X began to turn his life around during his time in prison, partly through his conversion to Islam, but more so through a fellow inmate who inspired in him a serious passion for reading. He writes in his autobiography: In every free moment I had, if I was not reading in the library, I was reading on my bunk. You couldn’t have gotten me out of books with a wedge [...] In fact, up until then, I had never been so truly free in my life [...] My homemade education

Not long ago, an English writer telephoned my from London, asking questions. One was, ‘What’s your alma mater?’ I told him, ‘Books.’ You will never catch me with a free fifteen minutes in which I’m not studying something... https://www.elitedaily.com/ https://www.elitedaily.com/ https://www.elitedaily.com/ https://www.elitedaily.com/ https://www.elitedaily.com/ 9/7/2018 Why Reading Is The Most Important Key To Success, As Told By 3 Successful People
  • 24. https://www.elitedaily.com/life/culture/influential-people- importance-reading/794975 5/5 These three people worked or continue to work in a range of fields spanning business, investing, technology, politics, public speaking, civil rights and leadership. They lived or live through dierent periods of time with dierent purposes and missions in life. Yet the common link among them is their anity for reading and their accreditation of success to that key trait. The takeaway is, regardless of your endeavor, your current situation, your upbringing, or the path you wish to take in life, reading is the key to upward mobility. It may not guarantee success, but it surely increases the chances of it.
