Mexico is located in North America, south of the United States, with coastlines along the Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea. It has a population of over 112 million people and a long history of indigenous civilizations as well as Spanish colonization beginning in the 1500s. The national Mexican identity is comprised of indigenous peoples who were conquered by Spanish settlers, creating a blended mestizo culture. Some of the earliest civilizations included the Olmecs, Zapotecs, and the Aztecs, who were eventually conquered by Hernan Cortes and the Spanish Empire in the 1500s.
