2. The meaning of Christmas
Christmas traditionally is a
Christian celebration, we
remember to the birth of Jesus
Christ. But also Christmas
symbolize the love, family, and
peace.
3. Advent wreath
Advent is the period of waiting and preparation for
the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus Christ.

5. Advent starts on the fourth Sunday
before December 25, which is the
Sunday between November 27 and
December 3.

6. In the Catholic Liturgy is convenient those
advent wreath, which has got three purple
and one pink candles. Nowadays there are
many kinds of wreaths.
7. Mikulás
St Nicholas or Santa Claus also visits Hungary, but he comes
on 6th December. In Hungary we call him 'Mikulás’ and
Télapó (Father Christmas). Children leave out shoes or boots
on a windowsill to be filled with goodies!
8. 13th December – Luca Day
This is the shortest day and the longest night. There are
a lot of belief of this day.
On this day should not be lent anything, it’s not allowed to borrow, because
they will be witches things.
On this day it is not allowed to whip or sew, because hens will not give any
eggs in the few time.
The brooms should be hidden, for fear of to fly the witches with.
Luca chairs are to be prepared.
On this day girls predict who will be their husband, and which job will they
have.

9. Luca day wheat
On the day of Luca should be
the corn plant to be green at
Christmas. Than it will be given
to the animals to be fertility on
the next year.
We plant wheat in hope of rich harvest.
10. Luca chair
On the 13th of December men begin to
hew out the chair, because they must be
ready till Christmas.
According to folk belief, who stand
on this chair, it can see, who is the
witch.
11. Bethlehem nativity play
It is the most famous
tradition, which shows the
birth of Jesus Christ. It’s
dramatic game. Children
show it in the church and in
houses.
The roles are the following:
Mary (mother of Jesus)
Joseph (father of Jesus)
Shepherds
Angels

12. Regölés is a tradition in Hungary where
young men go around the village and tell all
the people their good wishes.
13. The importance of dishes on our
Christmas tables
They cut an apple for
as many pieces as
many members the
family had.
Pumpkin, bean, lentils
and peas for wealth.
Bread crumbs for
hens that they lay
more eggs.
Hay under the
table for health.
14. In Hungary, Christmas Eve is Szenteste
very important and is called
'Szenteste' which means Holy
Evening. People spend this day
with their family and in the
afternoon they decorate the
Christmas Tree. Sometimes
only the adults decorate the tree
(without the children there), so
when children come in and see
the tree, it's a great surprise and
they are told that Angels or
Jesus Christ gave the tree and
the gifts for them.

19. Szaloncukor
