2) The scribes and Pharisees, who were the most religiously devoted of Jesus' time, relied on external righteousness through strict observance of religious laws and customs.
3) However, Jesus says that this external righteousness is not sufficient and that one must have a righteousness that comes through faith in Christ to enter the kingdom of heaven.
