What I’m talking
about today
How it all began:
BBC Connected Studio
6 hours
20+ teams
1 two minute pitch
Challenge:
Engage 16-19 year olds in
the Scottish Referendum
6 hours
20+ teams
1 two minute pitch
Challenge:
Engage 16-19 year olds in
the Scottish Referendum
(Pressure)
Learning about politics can
seem daunting, difficult,
boring or even irrelevant.
!
!
Our approach:
We wanted to create
A hub of
all BBC
Referendum
content
A place to
learn
gradually
A way for
users to get
answers to
their questions
An interactive space where
no question is too big, small or ‘stupid’ to ask
On the day solution
What is it?
The 2 minute pitch
Quick Concise Dont throw up
(In my head)
They picked ours
(What happened in my head)
The judges chose ours
…2 Build Studios later
Then we had to craft it
Fully responsive mobile first site
It’s not an app
Content on the hub
Core
fact
panels
iPlayer
media
Core
questions
BBC News
editorial
content
News articles
load in directly
Topics can be
filtered to allow
users to see what is
important to them
Knowledge
testing questions
throughout
BBC News answer
dependent on
users response
Questions are
entry points to
related articles
Daily questions are pushed out via social
media to encourage gradual learning
Demo
Getting it out there
We created a
Photo Booth for
people to ask their
own Referendum
questions
We used BBC News resources to get
answers and shared them online
referend-erm.com/ask
Clicking a question
reveals the BBC News
teams response
And…we wanted users to be able
to directly ask their own questions
You can submit your
question here
referend-erm.com
Thanks
