• Pimps are sex traffickers who abuse and
manipulate their victims.
• Traffickers target teens because they are
easy to trick and very trusting.
• 100,000 youth are victims every year
• Most are recruited from ages 12-14 years
Raise your hand
Have you been to any of the following in the
last week?
• A mall
• A grocery store
• A coffee shop
• A social media site (Facebook, etc.)
Would you be able to identify potential signs of
recruitment if you saw them in action?
Pay Attention

• Makes promises that are too good to be true
• Suggests they know how to make money
• Buys expensive gifts and likes to flash
money

• Significantly older or controlling boyfriend
You can make a difference.
• Know the tricks used by traffickers
• Be a good friend
• Report it:

or in person…
 Tell someone you trust!
 Report it to the police.
 Call 1-800-THE-LOST or use the web:

Editor's Notes

  1. Presenter Notes: -Pimps are traffickers. Don’t be fooled by the images you see on TV or in music videos. The fur coats and fancy cars help them hide the truth. -Pimps physically and sexually abuse their victims. They beat, rape and torture women and girls, then sell them for sex. They only care about money and will do anything it takes to make sure they have lots of it. -These traffickers target teens because they know how to trick them. They will make promises and pretend to care about young girls, shower them with gifts and attention, painting the picture that a glamorous life of travel and money is in store. They pretend to be a loving boyfriend until they reveal their true intentions. By that time, the victims realize there is no way out. -An estimated 100,000 American kids are trafficked every year. They are in every state and most cities.
  2. Presenter Notes: **Ask your students to raise their hands if they have been to the mall, the store, or a coffeeshop in the last week. Most likely all of the students will have been to one of those places. This is a good illustration for how easily our lives can intersect with victims and their traffickers.**-The mall is one of the biggest recruiting grounds for pimps, along with the bus stop, neighborhood parks, etc. They love to hang out where youth are. Lacy’s pimp stalked her all over her neighborhood, bumping into her at the grocery store and at Starbucks. While she thought these were accidental meetings, it was all part of his plan to gain her trust. -Pimps also recruit online through social media sites. They may lie about their age, friends, and profession.**Ask your students if they could identify potential signs of recruitment, and to discuss what those would be.**-Pimps are predators. They choose a victim and pursue her, getting to know everything about her so they can plan how to trick her. During the recruitment and grooming process, pimps will shower their victims with compliments designed to gain their trust and make them feel flattered. They may be multiple years older than their victims, but treat and talk to them as a girlfriend. Pimps will choose victims who have insecurities, a lack of self confidence or self esteem. They will make big promises about what they can buy or acquire. They may be accompanied by other females who also work to convince the victim that he is trustworthy and capable of doing everything he promises. He may promise the girl a career in modeling, acting, dancing, etc. He may paint a glamorous picture of what life would be like with him, while simultaneously manipulating the girl to turn away from her family and friends. His goal is to become the center of her life and he will do whatever it takes to get there.
  3. Presenter Notes: -Do you know how to recognize a pimp if he tries to recruit you or one of your friends? Most traffickers rely on their skills with psychological manipulation and coercion. They may be very friendly at first, making it harder to know their true intentions. There are specific signs that you can look for:--Pimps often make promises that seem too good to be true- that they’ll buy you an expensive car, get you into a modeling career, help you get through college, travel the world or have a big house and nice clothes.--Pimps will ask how much money you’re making at your job and suggest they know how to help you make more.--Pimps will buy their recruits expensive gifts (phones, clothes, shoes, purses) and flash their money to prove their ability to take care of their victims.--Pimps are vague about what they do for a living. They will focus on their money and use that as their main tactic to manipulate victims. --Pimps will approach their victims as loving boyfriends, but also come across very controlling and dominating.
  4. Presenter Notes: -You’re probably wondering what you can do to prevent this from happening to you and your friends.-The best thing you can do is to know how to recognize the tactics used by pimps. -Be a good friend. If you think one of your friends is involved in a potentially dangerous situation or relationship, be honest with them and confide in a trusted adult. Don’t keep it a secret. -Don’t be afraid to call the national hotline to report your suspicions. You can also report it on their website. -The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has a 24-hr hotline for reports on any type of sexual exploitation with children. They receive reports regarding sexual images, online predators, prostitution, molestation, or any information about websites on the internet that have sexual material of children. They work hand in hand with local and federal police to track down predators.
