Kung fu originated from ancient Chinese martial arts and the hand combat techniques of the army. Over time, kung fu developed extensive training methods for both external techniques like stances and strength as well as internal techniques like breathing, bravery, and meditation. Today, kung fu has evolved into many styles like wushu, tai chi, and the martial arts of the Shaolin monks, which all draw from traditional Chinese martial arts but are practiced for both combat and relaxation in modern society.
