China implemented a one-child policy from 1979 to 2015 to control population growth, limit resource scarcity and boost economic development. This led to a rapidly aging population as fewer children were born, challenges meeting labor needs, and the preference for sons over daughters causing a gender imbalance. While initially successful in slowing population growth, long term consequences included a shrinking workforce and fewer caregivers for an aging society.
