The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a development project connecting Gwadar Port, Pakistan to Xinjiang, China through highways, railways and pipelines. Costing an estimated $45-55 billion, CPEC aims to boost trade and regional prosperity through energy and infrastructure projects including power plants providing 10,000MW of electricity, road networks, an upgraded Karachi-Lahore motorway, and an optical-fiber cable. Security concerns exist due to threats from separatist and militant groups, which Pakistan is addressing through additional security training and deployment of personnel to protect Chinese workers on the project.

5. INTRODUCTION
• The CPEC is a development mega project that will
connect Gwadar Port (Pakistan) to Xinjiang (China)
• It was proposed by China in May 2013
• It will link China and Pakistan through highways,
railways and pipelines to transport oil and gas
• It was inaugurated by Chinese President after His
visit to Pakistan

6. Objectives of CPEC
• Regional peace, prosperity of poor people of
Southern Asia
• To enhance trade among Pakistan, China and other
Gulf Countries
• China is interested to extend Pak-Iran pipeline to Its
western territory
• China will access to Gwadar port

9. Power Generation
• It is not merely a road project but a framework of
economic cooperation in various sectors
• 17 projects will be initiated by Private Firms in which
12 are of power generation
• New dams will be constructed (including Diamer-
Bhasha dam)
• It will gain power of about 8370 MW

11. Road Infrastructures
• Karakoram Highway will be reconstructed
• 1152 Km long Karachi-Lahore motorway will connect
two big cities of Pakistan
• Road network of Baluchistan and KPK will be
improved
• Western route of CPEC will almost pass through
Baluchistan

13. Railway Infrastructure
• Peshawar-Karachi railway line will be completed by
2019
• 250 new passenger coaches and 21 new stations are
also part of the project
• 27.1 Km long Orange line of metro train is under
construction
• The construction of 3000 km long railway line will
connect China to Pakistan

15. Natural Gas Transport
• 711 km long pipeline will be constructed from
Gwadar to Nawabshah which is also a part of
2775 km long Pak-Iran gas pipeline
• This pipeline will transport 1 billion cubic ft.

16. Security Concerns
• Some separatist groups in China are trying to
obstruct this project
• Militant groups in Western Pakistan are terrorizing
the Chinese Nationals
• There is threat of kidnapping of the workers in
frontier areas
• Foreign hostile agencies are also trying tp sabotage
the project

17. Steps to overcome security threats
• Pakistan plans to train 12,000 security personnel to
protect Chinese workers
• 8,000 Pakistani security officials are deployed for the
protection of over 8,100 Chinese workers in Pakistan
• Intelligence agencies of Pakistan and China will
exchange information with each other
• The political leadership of Pakistan is ready to
welcome this Game Changer (CPEC)
