Chile is located in South America, bordered by Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru. It has a population of around 16 million people and its capital is Santiago. The geography of Chile is diverse, with over 2,000 volcanoes including 55 that are still active. Traditional Mapuche culture can be seen in southern Chile, known for customs, handicrafts, and resistance against Spanish/Chilean forces. Famous Chilean artists include the Nobel Prize-winning poets Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda. Víctor Jara was a politically inspired singer who was tortured and killed after the 1973 coup that installed the Pinochet dictatorship until 1990.
