Childhood
Refers to the time or state of being a
child,the early stage of development.The
period from infancy to puberty.
It connotes a time of innocense where
one is free from responsibility but
vulnerable to forces in his environment.
It suggest period where one enjoy
closeness with parents and shared
expectations.
Early Childhood
Two stages
 Names used by parents:
 most problematic age, sloppy
age,quarrelsome age
Names used by parents:
the problem stage,toy age
Name used by educators:
the preschool age
Late Childhood
Names used by educators:
elementary school age, critical
period in the achievement drive.
Changing Patterns of Childhood
(Typical Free Child)
“Typical Child”
Adolescence
Came from the latin word Adolescentia,from
adolescere which means ‘to grow up”.
A transitional age of physical and
psychological human development generally
occuring during the period from puberty to
legal adulthood.
The period following the onset of puberty
during which a young person develops from a
child into an adult(ages 13-19 years old)
3 Main Stages
Early Adolescence(9-13 years)
-Characterized by a spurt of growth and
the development of secondary sexual
characteristics.
Middle Adolescence(14-15 years)
-this stage is distinguished by the
development of a separate identity from
parents, of new relationships with peer
groups and the opposite sex.
Late Adolescence(16-19 years)
-at this stage, adolescents have fully
developed physical characteristics,and have
formed a distinct identity and have well-
formed opinions and ideas.(NCERT 1999)
The Rights Of Children and Young Persons
1. Every child is endowed with the dignity and worth of a
human being from the moment of his conception, as
generally accepted in medical parlance, and has,
therefore, the right to be born well.
2. Every child has the right to a wholesome family life
that will provide him with love, care and understanding,
guidance and counselling, and moral and material security.
The dependent or abandoned child shall be provided with
the nearest substitute for a home.
3. Every child has the right to a well-rounded development
of his personality to the end that he may become a happy,
useful and active member of society. The gifted child
shall be given opportunity and encouragement to develop
his special talents. The emotionally disturbed or socially
maladjusted child shall be treated with sympathy and
understanding, and shall be entitled to treatment and
competent care. The physically or mentally handicapped
child shall be given the treatment, education and care
required by his particular condition.
4. Every child has the right to a balanced diet, adequate
clothing, sufficient shelter, proper medical attention, and
all the basic physical requirements of a healthy and
vigorous life.
5. Every child has the right to be brought up in an
atmosphere of morality and rectitude for the enrichment
and the strengthening of his character.
6. Every child has the right to an education
commensurate with his abilities and to the development of
his skills for the improvement of his capacity for service
to himself and to his fellowmen
7. Every child has the right to full opportunities for safe
and wholesome recreation and activities, individual as well
as social, for the wholesome use of his leisure hours.
8.Every child has the right to protection against
exploitation, improper influences, hazards, and other
conditions or circumstances prejudicial to his physical,
mental, emotional, social and moral development.
9. Every child has the right to live in a community and a
society that can offer him an environment free from
pernicious influences and conducive to the promotion of
his health and the cultivation of his desirable traits and
attributes.
10. Every child has the right to the care, assistance, and
protection of the State, particularly when his parents or
guardians fail or are unable to provide him with his
fundamental needs for growth, development, and
improvement.
11.Every child has the right to an efficient and honest
government that will deepen his faith in democracy and
inspire him with the morality of the constituted
authorities both in their public and private lives.
12. Every child has the right to grow up as a free
individual, in an atmosphere of peace,
understanding, tolerance, and universal
brotherhood, and with the determination to
contribute his share in the building of a better
world.
Other rights of the children as embodied in
the CRC and adapted by General Assembly on
November 20,1989
The State Parties to the conventions shall:
a. Respect and ensure the rights to each child
within their jurisdiction of any kind.
b. Register the child immediately after birth
and have the right from birth to a
name,nationality,and right to know and be cared
c. Ensure that a child shall not be separated
from his or her parents against his will except
when separation is necessary for her best
interests of the child after having been
determined by judicial review.(Article 9:1)
d. Respect the rights of the child to freedom
of thought, conscience and religion (Article
14:1)
e. Recognize the rights of the child to freedom of
association and peaceful assembly. (Article 15:1)
f.Not subject the child to arbitrary interference with his
or her privacy,family,or correspondence nor to unlawful
attacks on his honor and repution.(Article 16:1)
g. Recognize the function of mass media and ensure that
the child has access to information/material from a
diversity of national and international sources (Article
17:a.b.)
h. Ensure recognition that both parents have common
responsibilities for the upbringing and development of the
child.(Article 18:1
i. Take all appropriate legislative, administrative, social
and educational measures to protect the child from all
forms of violence, injury or abuse, neglect, maltreatment
and exploitation.(Article 19:1)
j. Provide assistance to a child temporarily deprived of a
family environment.( Article 26:1)
k. Permit a system of adoption that ensure that the best
interest of the child shall be paramount
consideration.(Article 21:1)
l. Recognize for every child the right to benefit from
social security.(Article 26:1)
m. Recognize the right of the child to education with a
view to achieving this right progressively and on the basis
of equal opportunity.( Article 28:1)
n. Recognize the right of the child to be protected from
economic exploitation and from performing any work that
is liely to be hazardous or to interfere with the child’s
education.(Article 32:1)
The Present Situation of the Filipino Children
and Young Persons
According to different studies,the disheartening and
alarming situations of the children and young persons
today are the following:
1.Sexual or physical abuse
2. Child labor
3. malnutrition
4.Parental neglect
5. Ending up roaming
the streets
Government and Private Organizations joined
together to protect the child’s interest ,raised
funds and build projects
1. Children’s Hour
2. “Ang Panaghoy ng mga Bata” (BPI)
3. Related projects sponsored by Tahanan Out-reach
Projects and Services Inc.(TOPS) and Create
Responsible Infants by Sharing (CRIBS)
4. Filiac Aesculapii (Daughters of Aesculapius)
Children and young persons should be
provided an environment where they can
grow and develop their potentials to the
fullest.They need
food,water,shelter,support,
guiadance,encouragement and above all, a
quality education that will provide them a
venue for a complete transformation as a
person.

Every child has the right to live in a community and a society that can offer him an environment free from pernicious influences and conducive to the promotion of his health and the cultivation of his desirable traits and attributes.

Every child has the right to the care, assistance, and protection of the State, particularly when his parents or guardians fail or are unable to provide him with his fundamental needs for growth, development, and improvement. 11.Every child has the right to an efficient and honest government that will deepen his faith in democracy and inspire him with the morality of the constituted authorities both in their public and private lives.
  • 14. 12. Every child has the right to grow up as a free individual, in an atmosphere of peace, understanding, tolerance, and universal brotherhood, and with the determination to contribute his share in the building of a better world.
  • 15. Other rights of the children as embodied in the CRC and adapted by General Assembly on November 20,1989 The State Parties to the conventions shall: a. Respect and ensure the rights to each child within their jurisdiction of any kind. b. Register the child immediately after birth and have the right from birth to a name,nationality,and right to know and be cared

Ensure that a child shall not be separated from his or her parents against his will except when separation is necessary for her best interests of the child after having been determined by judicial review.(Article 9:1) d. Respect the rights of the child to freedom of thought, conscience and religion (Article 14:1)
  • 17. e. Recognize the rights of the child to freedom of association and peaceful assembly. (Article 15:1) f.Not subject the child to arbitrary interference with his or her privacy,family,or correspondence nor to unlawful attacks on his honor and repution.(Article 16:1) g. Recognize the function of mass media and ensure that the child has access to information/material from a diversity of national and international sources (Article 17:a.b.)
  • 18. h. Ensure recognition that both parents have common responsibilities for the upbringing and development of the child.(Article 18:1 i. Take all appropriate legislative, administrative, social and educational measures to protect the child from all forms of violence, injury or abuse, neglect, maltreatment and exploitation.(Article 19:1) j. Provide assistance to a child temporarily deprived of a family environment.( Article 26:1)
  • 19. k. Permit a system of adoption that ensure that the best interest of the child shall be paramount consideration.(Article 21:1) l. Recognize for every child the right to benefit from social security.(Article 26:1) m. Recognize the right of the child to education with a view to achieving this right progressively and on the basis of equal opportunity.( Article 28:1) n. Recognize the right of the child to be protected from economic exploitation and from performing any work that is liely to be hazardous or to interfere with the child’s education.(Article 32:1)
