This document discusses various psychosocial approaches and psychotherapies relevant to child psychiatry. It describes therapies such as psychoeducation, parent counseling, psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, family therapy, group psychotherapy, play therapy, and others. It notes that while principles are similar to adult psychotherapy, key differences for children include their developmental level, dependence on adults, and involvement of parents in treatment. Therapies aim to improve function by addressing cognition, emotions, and underlying psychopathology through therapeutic relationships and play. Skill and understanding of child development is important for effective psychotherapy in children.

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is characterized by hostile and defiant behavior toward authority figures that interferes with day-to-day functioning. Children with ODD frequently argue, actively defy rules, and engage in temper tantrums. Biological, psychological, and social factors may contribute to ODD. Treatment involves parenting programs, psychotherapy, social skills training, and sometimes medication to treat coexisting conditions like ADHD. With positive parenting techniques that emphasize praise and limit setting, many children with ODD can improve.

Up to 40% of children with epilepsy develop anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders are very common in youth with epilepsy due to the unpredictable nature of seizures causing feelings of anxiety. Children with epilepsy may struggle to communicate their feelings effectively, which can increase anxiety levels and cause physical symptoms. Anxiety in children with epilepsy can present differently than in adults, with more argumentative, irritable, or aggressive behaviors as well as avoidance of activities and fears. Treatment for anxiety disorders in children with epilepsy includes antidepressant medications such as SSRIs, cognitive behavioral therapy to change negative thoughts, and psychotherapy to develop coping skills and a positive attitude.

The document provides an overview of postpartum depression (PPD), including its symptoms, risk factors, screening and treatment. Key points include:
- PPD affects 10-20% of women and has several risk factors including a history of depression or anxiety.
- Symptoms include sadness, lack of interest in the baby, and in severe cases thoughts of harming oneself or the baby.

Child counseling, also known as youth counseling, focuses on counseling children who have been diagnosed with mental disorders. Child counselors work with children experiencing issues like anxiety, depression, PTSD, or OCD. They employ strategies such as cognitive behavioral therapy, play therapy, family therapy, group therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and interpersonal therapy to help improve children's lives. To become a professional child counselor requires obtaining a master's degree in mental health counseling or a related field from a program that meets state licensing requirements. Additional certification can be earned through completing education and supervised experience in areas like play therapy.
The document discusses pediatric counseling and play therapy. It notes that children experience stressors like adults but lack a shield from them. Counseling for children is different due to factors like age, brain development, and emotions. Play therapy is described as using toys and games to help children express feelings and deal with behavioral/emotional difficulties. The goals are to improve expression, self-observation, coping skills, and relationships. Elements of play therapy include safety, love, security, reassurance and diversion.

ADHD Parent Guide
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is defined as a chronic neurological disorder characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity. In 2016, it is estimated that 6.1 million or 9.4% of children had a diagnosis of ADHD (
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
, n.d.). A diagnosis of ADHD can be both confusing and welcomed. Confusing because the details of the diagnosis are unknown but welcomed because the parents and child finally have a “why” for the child’s difficulties. This parent guide will discuss the pathophysiolology, diagnosing, signs/symptoms, treatment options, and other aspects involved in an ADHD diagnosis.
Pathophysiology
Many research studies suggest ADHD may be caused by interactions between genes and environmental or non-genetic factors. Many cases of ADHD have a genetic origin. A child is 50% more likely to have ADHD if their parent was diagnosed with the condition and 25% of the children with ADHD have parents who have met the criteria for a diagnosis of ADHD. Other factors that can contribute to ADHD is substance use, low birth weight, brain injuries and exposure to some environmental toxins.
ADHD is a result of neurotransmitter disease dysfunction, that effect dopamine and norepinephrine. Dopamine has a role in a person's ability to learn and reinforcing trained response to various situations. Dopamine also plays and important role in "working memory"(
Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
, 2004). Norepinephrine effects a person's alertness and attention. Norepinephrine is activated by novel and important stimuli and are quiescent during sleep.
Environmental factors of ADHD is a result of a toxin such as lead or other nuero-toxic substances that may result in delayed development of the child's brain before, during or birth. Substance abuse is a very common cause of pre- and perinatal factors that may result in ADHD. Exposure of the fetus to alcohol is associated with a reduction in the volume of the prefrontal and temporal cortices, the brain areas involved in regulation of attention and control of impulsivity. 2. Psychotherapy is sought for children and adolescents for
different issues including mood issues, self harming,
bullying, attachment issues, difficult behaviors, eating
disorder, Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),
Learning difficulties, Autism etc. Usually child
psychotherapy involves therapeutic work with a child and
parents, or a family member. There are many effective
forms of child therapy with evidence to back them up,
including Applied Behavior Analysis, Behavior Therapy,
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, Family
Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, and Organization
Training (Society of Clinical Child & Adolescent
Psychology, 2017).
WHAT IS CHILD THERAPY?
3. WHEN IS CHILD THERAPY EFFECTIVE?
If a parent or guardian is unsure whether their child requires counselling, the list of symptoms
below can help. If the child exhibits one or more of these symptoms, as well as the parent's
concern, it's a good idea to have him or her evaluated.
Unwarranted aggression;
Incontinence;
Difficulty adjusting to social situations;
Frequent nightmare and sleep difficulties;
A sudden drop in grades at school;
Persistent worry and anxiety;
Withdrawing from activities they normally enjoy;
Loss of appetite or dramatic weight loss/gain;
The following are symptoms that may indicate a problem
that therapy can correct or help with:
4. AT WHAT AGE SHOULD A CHILD SEE A
THERAPIST?
There is no age limit for children who can and
cannot receive counselling. From toddlers in
preschool to teenagers in high school, everyone is
welcome (which is why it is sometimes referred to
as child and adolescent therapy).
However, the reasons a child or adolescent might
work with a therapist, as well as the therapist's
therapy methods, differ for different age groups.
5. HOW CAN CHILD THERAPY HELP?
Therapy, like it can help adults, can help children in a variety of ways. The preceding section
provides a brief overview of how it may benefit various age groups. However, in a broader sense,
child therapy can help with both serious problems, such as mental illness, and minor ones, such as
difficult feelings associated with moving to a new town.
The main thing is that many children and teenagers can benefit from talking with a
counsellor. The following are common issues addressed in child therapy:
Mental illness, such as depression or anxiety
The death of a loved one and other difficult losses
Abuse (sexual, emotional, physical, mental)
Addiction in the family
Parents’ divorce
Behavioral issues
Developmental delays
