- Chikungunya virus is transmitted through mosquito bites and causes joint pain and swelling. It has spread rapidly in recent decades from Africa to Asia, Europe, and the Americas. - Symptoms include fever and joint pain, and complications can include inflammation of the eyes, heart, liver, and brain. There is no vaccine or treatment, only symptom relief. - The virus is spread by Aedes mosquitoes which live in parts of Texas, raising concern it could establish local outbreaks in the United States from infected travelers. A 2010 report warned of this risk.
