How to Apply: Step-by-Step Guide
This guide will take you through the application process for Chevening Scholarships. It will reiterate
the eligibility criteria and provide top tips for a successful application.
1. Select your country and the award you wish to apply for
On the Chevening website (www.chevening.org), click on the ‘Apply’ tab at the top. Next, select your
country of nationality and select your level (i.e. scholarship).
Remember: you should only apply to the country where you hold nationality and for which you can
provide the relevant documentation.

Once you have selected the correct country and award, click on ‘Apply for Scholarship’.

3. Read description
Read through the description carefully before clicking ‘Apply’.

4. Register details
On the next page, you will be asked to register your details on the online system. In order to register,
you will need to provide your name, a valid email address and password. Your password should be a
minimum of eight characters long and you will be asked to confirm your password. In order to
proceed to the next step, you will need to agree to the Data Protection and Privacy statement.
Once you have completed the required boxes, click ‘Submit Registration’ and proceed to the next
stage.

5. Confirm Chevening eligibility criteria
After clicking on ‘Apply’, the application will take you through some eligibility questions relating to
your previous education, citizenship, work experience, and future career plans.
Under each question, the drop down menu will give you a choice to answer: Yes or No.
To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship, you must:
 Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country
 Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your award has
ended
 Have an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry to a postgraduate
programme at a UK University. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1
honours degree in the UK

 Have at least two years’ work experience
 Apply to three different eligible UK University courses and have received an unconditional
offer from one of these choices by 12 July 2018
 Meet the Chevening English Language requirement by 12 July 2018.
Depending on the answer you select, you will automatically be informed if you have passed the
eligibility questions.
In the case above, the candidate is not eligible for a Chevening Scholarship because she has
previously received scholarship funding from the UK Government.
To recap, you are not eligible for a Chevening Award if you:
 Hold British or dual British citizenship (unless you are a citizen of a British Overseas Territory
or hold BN(O) and are applying from Hong Kong);
 Are an employee, a relative of an employee, or a former employee (since July 2015) of Her
Majesty’s Government (including British Embassies/High Commissions, the Department for
International Development, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, UK Trade
and Investment, the Ministry of Defence and the Home Office), the British Council, a
partner, a sponsoring UK university, or a staff member of the Association of Commonwealth
Universities; or
 Have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK Government-funded scholarship.
Chevening Alumni are not eligible to apply for a further scholarship but may be eligible to
apply for a fellowship five years after completion of the first award.

 Applicants should select that they have identified three eligible courses
 Applicants should indicate that they understand the requirement of applying to these three
courses, alongside their Chevening application.
Once you have passed the eligibility requirements, click ‘Submit’ and proceed to the next stage of
the application.

Once the pre-screen has been completed, applicants will be able to start their application.

7. Complete personal details and contact details sections
The next two pages will ask you for your personal details, including date of birth, dual citizenship (if
applicable), and contact details.
Depending on your country of residence, there may be multiple interview locations available to you.
Please ensure that you select the correct interview location.
If you are invited to an interview, you will receive further information on how to confirm your
interview slot.

8. Complete previous education section
The next page will ask you for
details of your undergraduate
education. In the dropdown
menus, you will be able to select
your country of study, name of
university/college (or ‘other’
should your university not be
listed), study dates, degree type
and name, and results.
If you have additional
undergraduate or postgraduate
degrees, click on ‘Add another
entry’ to add these details.
Once you have completed your
education details, click ‘Save and
Continue’ to proceed to the next
page.
Note: you can upload all supporting documents (transcripts/certificates) once you have submitted
your application via the application centre. All supporting documents must be submitted before 12
July 2018. For UK degree equivalency, please contact your chosen UK universities for advice.
9. Complete work experience section
Next, you’ll be asked to complete details of your current employment including: name of current
employer, job title, start date, hours worked per week and the total number of weeks worked.
You must ensure that you meet the minimum work experience requirement before submitting your
application. Remember, the minimum requirement for scholarships is 2 years.

Eligible types of employment are:
 Full-time; part-time, voluntary; and
paid/unpaid internships. Work experience can
be completed either before, during or after
graduating from your undergraduate degree.
Ineligible types of employment include:
 Employment undertaken as part of your
degree (e.g. placements).
You can submit up to ten different
employment periods in order to meet the
requirement.
The minimum work experience requirement is
calculated by multiplying the number of hours
worked per week by the number of weeks
worked per year.
For Chevening, it is assumed that applicants in
full-time employment work 35 hours per week
and 40 weeks per year.
Therefore, the minimum number of hours for
scholarships is 2,800 hours (2 years).
Once you have completed this section, click
‘Save and Continue’ to proceed to the next
page.
Note: If you are in current employment, it is not a requirement of Chevening that you resign from
your position. It is your responsibility to discuss your application with your employer.
10. Complete English language requirements
On the next slide, you will be taken through Chevening’s English language requirements. To receive a
Chevening Scholarship, all applicants must demonstrate that they have fulfilled the Chevening

English language requirement by 12 July 2018. We accept English language tests (and the minimum
results) from the five providers listed:
 Academic IELTS
 Cambridge English: Advanced
 Pearson PTE Academic
 TOEFL iBT
 Trinity ISE II (B2)
The English language test must have been
taken from one of these providers on or
after 1 October 2016. If you do not
already have an existing eligible test
certificate, it is your responsibility to
ensure that you have booked a test date
so that you can obtain the required
results.
If you already have an English language
certificate, you have the option to upload
it now, or if you haven’t yet taken the
test (or if your current certificate has
expired), you can take the test and
upload it at a later date. Remember: you
must upload the certificate by 12 July
2018. We advise that you meet these
requirements as early as possible, as test
centres are limited in certain countries.
You are free to take tests more than once
in order to meet the Chevening English
language requirement. Please note that
Chevening does not pay for costs
associated with English language testing.
You are responsible for booking and
paying for costs associated with these
tests.
We do accept English language
exemptions based on the categories specified by UKVI. Please visit the website for more details:
http://www.chevening.org/apply/english-language-requirement. If you believe you are exempt,
please upload the relevant document to the application centre after submitting your application.
If you fail to demonstrate that you have met the required English language level by 12 July 2018, or
fail to provide evidence that you qualify for an exemption, your application will be deemed
ineligible.

As well as meeting the Chevening English language requirement, you may also have to meet certain
English language criteria to be eligible for your university course. Universities may only accept a
certain type of test or ask for higher minimum test scores. Be sure to check with your university
which test they require you to take.
Note: Applicants are not permitted to take pre-sessional courses to fulfil the English language
requirement. You will be required to take one of the approved English language tests unless you
meet one of the exempt categories.
11. Select university courses
Next, you’ll be asked to select three different courses. You can apply to the same university, but the
courses must be different. You can also apply to the same titled course (or related courses) at three
different universities. If you fail to select three courses, your application will be deemed ineligible.
Choose your courses carefully: they should
reflect your current or future career goals,
and they must meet our requirements.
Courses must be:
 Full-time
 Start in autumn (i.e.
August/September)
 Lead to a master’s qualification
In addition, you cannot change your courses
after submitting your application. Courses
are ineligible if they are:
 part-time;
 distance-learning;
 more than 12 months in duration;
 less than nine months in duration;
 and PhD/MPhil
If you have already applied to the courses
and have an offer letter (whether it’s a
conditional or unconditional offer), you can
upload it after you have submitted your
application via your application centre.

If you haven’t already applied to the courses, please remember to apply for your chosen courses at
the same time as submitting your Chevening application.
You must upload an unconditional offer letter before 12 July 2018. If you are issued a conditional
offer letter, you must meet the university’s conditions (e.g. English language) well in advance of the
deadline (12July 2018) in order for the university to issue you an unconditional letter, which you can
then upload onto the application system.
Note: A standard Chevening Scholarship covers the full cost of your tuition fees. However, a cap of
£18,000 applies to all MBA courses. If you apply to an MBA course that is over £18,000, you will be
required to pay the difference.

12. Progress tracker
As you go along, the progress tracker on the left hand side of your
application will inform you of the progress you are making.
The checkmarks denote completed sections and the crosses
highlight those sections that have not yet been completed.
Remember – you do not need to complete your application all at
once; you can save and return to your application at any point
whilst applications are still open. To do this, simply make sure you
click ‘Save and Continue’. When you log out and then log back in,
you will be taken to the last saved section of your application.
13. Complete ‘Leadership & Influence’ and ‘Networking’ questions
The next two pages will ask you to write about your leadership, influence, and networking skills.
Remember that we are looking for individuals that will be future leaders and influencers with strong
networking skills.
You must answer each question in 500 words or less. Answers of fewer than 100 words will not be
accepted.

Tip: To increase your chances of success, remember to support your answers with clear examples,
demonstrating how you meet Chevening’s requirements.
We are looking for scholars who are committed to building a global professional network and
establishing links with the UK. We also want to know how the relationships you make in the UK will
benefit your home country,

Tip: Remember that your answers should be well-written with no spelling or grammatical errors. You
could prepare your answers in Microsoft Word, then copy and paste your final answers into your
application once complete.
14. Complete ‘Study in the UK’ question
Next you will be asked to explain why you have selected your three courses and how they relate to
your previous academic or professional experience, as well as your future career plans.
You should think about:
 How will your chosen courses allow you to achieve your career goals?
 How has your academic background prepared you for study in the UK?
Again, you must answer the question in between 100 and 500 words.
Once you are happy with your answer, click ‘Save and Continue’.
Tip: Please do not duplicate the information you have entered in the work experience and education
sections. It is important that you explain how your experience is relevant and not just reiterate what
you have done.

15. Complete ‘Career Plan’ question
Next, you will be asked to write about your future career plans. You must be able to demonstrate a
clear post-study career plan, so please outline your immediate plans upon returning home, as well as
your longer term career goals.
You should also think about:
 What steps will you take to achieve your career plan upon returning home?
 How will your chosen career plan benefit your home country?
Again, you must answer the question between 100 and 500 words.
Tip: You may wish to think about how your career goals relate to what the UK is currently doing in
your home country. You can check the following website for more information:

16. Answer immigration questions
Next, you will be asked to answer a number of immigration questions, including: details of your
passport, previous visits to the UK, and any criminal convictions held in the UK or any other country.
Once you have submitted your application, you will be required to upload a copy of your passport in
PDF format.

Remember: all Chevening scholars must travel on ordinary passports (i.e. non-diplomatic and non-
government official passports).

17. Reconfirm Chevening eligibility conditions
On the next page, you’ll be asked to confirm that you meet the eligibility conditions for Chevening.
Remember:
 You must not be an employee, a relative of
an employee, or a former employee (since July
2015) of Her Majesty’s Government (including
British Embassies/High Commissions, the
Department for International Development, the
Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, UK
Trade and Investment, the Ministry of Defence
and the Home Office), the British Council, a
partner, a sponsoring UK university, or a staff

 You must not be a British national, or hold a
dual British nationality
 You must return home for a minimum of
two years immediately after your award
 You must not have received prior funding
from the UK Government to study in the UK
18. Confirm Chevening Terms and Conditions
Next you’ll be asked to confirm that you adhere to the Chevening Terms and Conditions both during
and after your award.

 Agreeing to attend mandatory events
 Responding to surveys
 Returning home for a minimum of two years
after your award
 Engaging with the alumni community in
your home country

Next, you’ll be asked to enter the details of two referees. Referees can either be from a professional,
or academic capacity, or both. They should not be a relative or personal friend. Ensure you choose
your referees wisely – two people who know you very well.

At this stage you only need to give the details of
two referees, you cannot upload the references
themselves. You will be required to upload your
references by 26 February 2018 if invited to
interview. Ensure that you obtain references in
good time, so that they are ready to upload
should you be invited to interview.
20. Equal Opportunities
Next, you’ll be asked to answer a couple of equal opportunity questions. Your answers will remain
confidential and will not influence the assessment of your application.

On the next slide, you’ll be asked for details of where you heard of Chevening, why you have
submitted an application, and whether you have applied to Chevening in previous years.
Again, these questions will not affect the outcome of your application—they are simply for our own
monitoring purposes.
22. Submit application
Congratulations – you have made it to the last page! Once you have completed all of the sections,
you are now ready to submit your application.
Before submitting, you must tick the box and agree to the terms of the Data Protection and Privacy
Statement.

Only submit your application once you’re completely happy with it. When you are satisfied with your
application, click the 'Submit' button. Please note that once you have done this, you cannot modify
your application except for the contact details section.

Once you have submitted your application, you will be asked for your feedback on the online
application form, which will help us to improve the system for following years.
Your answers will not affect your Chevening application, so we would be grateful if you could please
provide us with honest feedback.

24. Application homepage
Once you have submitted your feedback, you will be taken to your application homepage.
Here you will be able to update your contact details and upload all supporting documents including:
university offer letters; English language certificate; immigration documents; or even withdraw your
application.
Please note that if you withdraw your application you cannot submit another application in this
application cycle.

Timeline:
 Once applications close in November, an external reading committee will commence the
application review process
 By February 2018, we will have notified all candidates of the outcome of their application
and whether you have successfully made it through to the interview stage
 The global interview period will take place from March to May 2018
 All candidates will be notified of the outcome of their interview in June. You will receive an
email confirming if you have been unsuccessful, placed in reserve, or successful. If you are
placed in reserve, you still have the chance of being upgraded at a later date if there are
sufficient funds and you have met the requirements. Reserve candidates will be notified of
their upgrade in July.
 For successful candidates, you will have until 12 July 2018 to provide all supporting
documents, including an unconditional offer and English language test results
 All successful candidates will commence their programmes in September/October 2018
